February 1972. Villa park.
Villa versus Santos. Among the 55k spectators was this lad.
I watched the maestro that was Pele from the Holte!
Genius
Tickets were 70p at the turnstile.
We stood in awe.
Villa won 2-1
Not that it mattered.
 :hi:

I was on the Holte that night too, my first ever visit to Villa park as a 6 year old. I don’t specifically remember Pele playing but do remember my dad and grandad raving about him, that we were in the presence of a genius. He also did a lap of honour at Highbury in May 1981 during the Arsenal Villa game. He’d retired by then but still looked as though he could have turned out for either team.

He was someone that transcended sport in the same way that Mohammad Ali did. He was a genius on the pitch and was revered wherever he went. May he rest in peace.

Jumpin. How many more of the 55k attendance are reading this now?
Very fond memories of my teenage years

Not too many. My dad and grandad are both Holte Enders In The Sky, as are many others who would have been there almost 51 years ago.

I remember listening to a radio interview with Emlyn Hughes (Crazy Horse), quite some time ago, he's dead by the way. He remembers Bill Shankly referring to Pele as Peel, much laughter in the Anfield  dressing room at the time.   :D

After the picture he asked her if it was a Leeds Rhinos scarf as he hadn't heard of the football team  :sarcastic:

I lament the passing of Pele’

I have since yesterday watched, via you tube, External Link/Members Only, and other sources, twice the whole game and as an Italy supporter I can say that Brazil where obviously the better team, but Brazil had weakness in defence which Italy tried to exploit, and gained a goal on only one occasion via Boninsegna. Albertosi was a much better goalkeeper then Felix, although Italy did have many chances and near misses.

The famous photograph of Pele celebrating his goal was on the 18th minute and was his first goal against Italy; there were others in his team who scored, and in chronological order they were;

Gerson                 66
Jairzinho              71
Carlos Alberto      86

Apart from Pele’, I really like Carlos Alberto; although from a team of such quality it is difficult to decide. They were all great and it saddens me to see there king pass away.

The whole Brazil team where brilliant, and whereas I normally hate my Nation Side to lose, to lose against such a side is an honour. I have many Brazilian friends and colleagues who reciprocate their respect and love of Italian football.

Even before this game there was the semi-final of Italy v. west Germany which was considered a classic, and much later in 1982 the famous quarter final of Italy and Brazil. Football is a great game, anything can happen.

Saw this on the local breakfast news this morning, apparently back in 1982 Bolton Wanderers tried to sign Pele as player manager, publicity stunt or deluded attempt to aim high  :unknown:

If big Sam had been the manager at that time I'm sure with a few envelopes stuffed with cash they would have signed him  :D

Pele at the old Burnden Park in the middle of winter, would have still been the best player on the pitch!   :D

Certain individuals will always be tattooed on society forever and he's one of them
Others have there moments and will disappear into the mist barely mentioned
