A bit older than me but not by much, one of the best live acts I've ever seen.
Sobering.

One of the all time great bands

Is that accurate or are you spreading Blasphemous Rumours?

Seriously though, totally agree, very sad to see him go

I’m with lamboman on this, very sobering. He’s was only a couple of years older than me.
Depeche mode along with new order pushed the boundaries of technology in the early 80’s to create their music.
Seemed like a thoroughly decent chap too. R.I.P.

No idea who he was. Would it be fair to say he was content to let Gahan and Gore be the "faces" of Depeche Mode and he took a backseat and shunned the limelight?

A fair appraisal.

Among Mode fans he was somewhat lovingly regarded as the band's accountant/cheque casher, as he didn't have that much input into the band as Clarke or Gore in the early days or as much as Alan Wilder when Clarke left.

Very dodgy leather S&M look on TOTP debut too: External Link/Members Only

(a mate works in the music biz and was not so charitable about him when alive...)

Even if your not into their music. You have to appreciate their contribution to the genre, their longevity etc.

I kind of like the quiet guys in some of the great bands. Let the frontman take all the credits and recognition. I’ll be able to walk down the street unnoticed kind of thing.
