Yes, I first had to read it at Kings and I was quite baffled at first by the language but also the level of depravity. This review kind of brought that to mind. I stick to Anne Tyler these days, although I’ve just encountered a very good book on Dylan and his influence on the 60s.

Yeah, I think the guy has called him out because of the Chauceresque language, and perhaps he’s mistaking that language for being fluffy and white knightish - that’s perhaps what’s thrown him I should think. There’s nothing in the review to suggest to me that it’s spurious. I remember writing a review themed around the Birmingham bombings in the 1970s, and I received pelters for it from some members, oh dear it makes me shudder to remember it. I felt it best to put up an apology in the end, although I did stand by it as a piece of writing. I’m hoping one day that The Guardian will serialise my reviews.
