To me, the worst of modern day gambling are online casino games.  These are computer controlled and so the random factor that occurs in real life gambling can be manipulated to ensure that you will lose.  Anybody who plays them is definitely a mug.   As they say, a fool and his money are easily separated.

I have conceded from the beginning that gambling is increasing, and will indeed increase, its still mainly a masculine activity, but its clear you do not understand addiction, so lets leave it at that.

I don't have to understand addiction, it's simply clear to me that with the vast  numbers of people obviously being introduced to betting and gambling now, and having it dangled under their noses every day with these cheesy bloody adverts, it's basic statistics that there will be an increasingly large and corrosive problem with it.

And no, it isn't just a masculine activity, have you not seen all the pink-branded, girly ads on TV for Bingo and other related girly-gambling?

What's been pointed out here is the meteoric rise in gambling advertising and sponsorship. A big change over the past few years. No-one's saying gambling should be banned or curtailed, simply perhaps that it oughtn't to be rammed in people's faces every five minutes.

They did away with betting tax nearly 20 years ago, it used to be 9% and the punter had the choice of paying it on his stake or on his winnings. That was in betting shops though and didn't apply to on course betting.

I believe the 9% tax (Fuck knows why Gordon Brown reduced it from 10% as it just made it harder to work out  ) was replaced with taxing the bookies profits instead

Yeah, it made it easier for punters to gamble though. Betting on odds on favourites is almost like buying money anyway but when tax had to be paid it was pointless unless at a meeting. Take the tax away and bookies were then on par with oncourse betting. That coupled with no tax on stake or winnings it cost the punter less in any case.

It all adds to those who are prone to it to become addicted.

For the last 20 years I have made my living from getting and it's getting harder and harder ! Iv had to have friends and colleagues open bank accounts for me so that I can open a new account so that I can get bets on.some of the accounts only last 5 or 6 bets before the accounts are closed or you are offered bets like 50p on a an even money favourite. I don't bet in large amounts only between £20 and £100 . But if you win over a short time or the horses you back shorten in price you are closed down.Over lockdown when there was no racing I had 2 accounts closed because I didn't get on any of the online casinos which they send offers to you every day.The bookies only want serial losers.
