Stirling  Moss actually supported Mike Hawthorn in a dispute over his driving at a previous GP that ensured Hawthorn took the 1st position.
RIP SM.....a true sportsman.

I wasn't aware of this until I read about it in the newspaper the other day. Mike Hawthorn was apparently disqualified after a race for reversing back onto the track after spinning off. Stirling Moss protested against his disqualification and had the verdict reversed so the race result stood. This act of sportsmanship would ultimately cost Stirling Moss the world championship by 1 point. I cannot imagine any of todays formula 1 drivers doing this.

The point I was making was not that he used reverse gear but Moss argued that Hawthorn  should not have been disqualified in the first place. Somehow I could not see Lewis Hamilton or any other top driver of today winning a race by default and asking for the verdict to be overturned.  Like most sports today Greed has overrun sportsmanship.. :hi:

True sportsmanship which would probably be lost on today's top sports stars irrespective of the sport.

Certainly not Seb Vettel, that's for sure.

Not all sports
Snooker stars still call fouls against themselves
last years world cricket final when the new Zealander 'caught' Stokes and  while falling over the ropes threw the ball to another fielder But did he throw it before he landed ? The second player immediately signalled 6 to the umpires

A very nice and likable gentleman; I had business dealings with him - actually spent a rather alcoholic  evening with him and his wife in his house in Shepherd's Market. He took my partner for a spin round Silverstone - exhilarating but terrifying apparently.
