I wouldn't be going in there, is a very rough area

Offline ElbowGrease

I've punted there with Lexi a few times and never had any issues - although I've always been in during daylight hours.  Dodgy as fuck area though, would avoid if possible but Lexi's blowjob is just too good :D

Offline michaelteam

You'll be alright. As the others said, don't go late at night but during the day it's fine.

Offline willie loman

up and coming as estate agents would say. ok during the day I imagine. These places are only a hell hole to live in, to visit they are ok, ive fucked in broomhouse and sighthill, stairs are a mess etc but quite safe

You’ll be fine. Flats are being bought up by Chinese students due to proximity to the University, so the area is ‘up & coming’ as Willie says. Still your fair share of Jakeys mind, there’s a half way house of sorts at the end of the road in, behind the multi storey car park, opposite the Holyrood 9A boozer where you’ll see some old school characters!
Fine through the day, parking is largely permits now though, with a few pay & display spaces.

It’s always been a bit of an anomaly of an area for me. Within 5 minutes walk of the parliament, royal mile, holyrood palace, the pleasance & holyrood park/Arthur’s seat. Prime Edinburgh real estate housing a council scheme that until a few years ago you’d avoid like the plague...

As I noted in my recent review of Lexi.. it seems a bit of rough area. Probably bit of drug dealing as well.  Someone asked me where they could get some grass when I was there.. was not comfortable it was middle of the day and that question did not help :scare:

Offline DickDiver

I wandered through at the weekend while the marathon festival was on at the park. It's unsightly but ok during the day.

I would not be going within a mile of it, with a wedge of cash in my pocket and distracted by a semi, after dark

Offline Poopster

Maybe it's just cos I'm hard as fuck but I'd have no worries punting there.  Or maybe it's just cos I've punted in some of the worst shitholes Scotland has to offer.  :P

Offline Jayf

I've been to a few punts there and never had any problems.  The real issue is parking.  At least its not greendykes lol

Police forgot about that part of town, a long time ago.

Here's what I dealt with, down there. https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=178248.0

Have also been stood up by a couple of others.

Every day is a school day on UKP...I'd never heard of Dumbiedykes until quite recently, when it was mentioned in a review...I think? So, when this thread turned up I just assumed it was out on the periphery of the city somewhere...and didn't bother reading. However, curiosity got the better of me and I was completely shocked to find out it's pretty central...I thought I knew central Edinburgh really well.

Having google mapped it, I know those flats, from a distance...never had any reason to explore them. However, that is going to change...the next time I'm through in our capital city, I'm going to make a point of having a wee wander through...a reccy, an undercover mission...to find out what it's all about?

Offline Hairpuller

Safe or not?

Is there a specific advert / WG you've spotted that works from there?

Never felt unsafe anywhere in our fair land. Did once in Englandshire...but that was my own stupidity.

once they get rid of the locals, these flats will be sought after, while under council stewardship, they were used as a dumping ground .

Hello my fellow punters,

I am coming to Edinburgh for a stag do in March and am looking for a decent punt to come to my hotel, this one called Jet drew my attention but I never noticed she had no feedback Since setting up her account, she has replied so my question is, is she safe to take one for the team or not,

Cheers ,

How would anyone know if it was 'safe to TOFTT or not'?  That's an oxymoron.

Back to the original point of the thread, it's just made me realise I deliberately parked the car in Viewcraig St one night (completely unrelated to punting), as it was the closest to where I was going in town I could get before 6, without having to sell a kidney in the process.

Council estate, sure. But nothing about it gave me the impression it was at all rough, thus utterly no reservations about going back to get the car late at night - doing so with no issues at all.

The fact The Daily Express ran this a few years ago, External Link/Members Only, and despite their pitiful best efforts, still didn't manage to make it seem that bad, even with all their, British-nationalist, authoritarian trash-embellishment - presumably purely done as a dig at the SNP for what's supposedly happening on their own governmental doorstep - tells you that it's pretty soft-core when it comes to Scottish housing schemes.

Moreover, some of the comments on this thread read as extremely right-wing, superior, middle-class, precious shite with an attitude of sheer, sneering snobbery - encouraged by lowbrow-patronising, primitively right-wing, sorry excuses for newspapers, such as the one above. Any area, Christ even any posh street, will have a few, but enough shitbags to give it a bad rep. And while I can't really judge it relative to other Edinburgh schemes, compared to what Glasgow has to offer, Dumbiedykes isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

In short, it sure as fuck ain't Possil.

This area was a total dumping ground for alkies and other undesirables, what has improved it, is the influx of immigrants. Why is criticising anti social behaviour right wing?

Offline The Man With No Name

This area was a total dumping ground for alkies and other undesirables, what has improved it, is the influx of immigrants. Why is criticising anti social behaviour right wing?

It isn't. But this is exactly my point - there aren't even any anecdotal examples of antisocial behaviour, nor even any vaguely intimidating circumstances listed on this thread. Indeed, the only specific claims I've managed to dig up myself to counter my own argument are - at best, utterly exaggerated and convoluted - if not downright contrived bollocks from a trash tabloid with its own precious, middle-England, right-wing-nationalist political agenda, playing to the moneyed, unionist gallery.

The reality is that this area is most likely given the presumption of a bad reputation, simply because it's an older council estate in central Edinburgh, surrounded by inflated, high-priced private homes. So relative to the luxury that surrounds it, it probably isn't that great. By definition, no area of social housing - no matter how desirable - will be, when perched right next to attractive, expensive, privately-owned historical property.

But while you suggest it's a location where the local council provide housing to alcoholics, drug addicts, or others in need of accommodation towards the bottom of the social ladder, I'm sure it's done here to a far lesser degree than in the likes of Muirhouse, Niddre or Sighthill. And as I stated before, stacked next to similar such schemes and others in Scotland - which is the only relevant comparison you can really make - I'm sure it's far better than average, if not near the top.

The fact of that matter is - what are your chances of actually running into any trouble here? Far less than being hit by an over-priced tram in the New Town, is the answer.

Well said!

I grew up in 80's Springburn (Glasgow), rough as fuck.  Moved to Edinburgh to Sighthill.  I thought it was ok, some bams but nowhere near as rough as where I came from, could actually walk about without fear of getting lamped.  When I mentioned to folk in Edinburgh that I lived in Sighthill, they shat themselves - they considered it a mental place.

Edinburgh has some rough bits - Niddrie, Muirhouse, Stenhouse but Dumbiedykes is more a holiday camp.  The posh folk drive though it to get a thrill I think.

If you wanted badger rough Edinburgh areas back then, Leith, Granton and Newhaven would oblige!

Offline willie loman

Theres always a show us your medals attitude on these threads, I can assure you that few on this thread know Edinburgh better than me,and not from reading the papers, incidentally some of the most expensive real estate in Edinburgh is the council block you will find on the borders of new town and stockbridge, I suspect most Edinburgh posters weren't aware that such a thing existed a council estate in stockbridge! Its most famous resident, now dead, could be seen sunning himself of a morning on those wooden in memoriam benches, such a feature of Edinburgh, this clown , while in jail for arson, claimed to have attacked jimmy boyle.
