Have been noticing there has been a substantial amount of reviews lately from Edinburgh which has got me thinking of trying further afield from Glasgow.

Im not sure of the areas in Edinburgh, so is there areas that should be avoided at all cost?

Even the schemes are pretty safe, these days.

I'd avoid Muirhouse, pilton, Niddre, wester hailes, and Stenhouse for starters, but some may disagree.

Presume you are generalising about these areas  as some of these areas have had massive investment and aren't as bad as previously.

l would add Restalrig, Lochend to this list.

If a WG advises she is working from the "Bananna Flats" or the other 2 Ugly High Rise flats down the bottom of Leith -  run.

He asked for areas to avoid and the one's I've mentioned are definitely top of the list, and as you've no doubt read, I stated that they aren't as bad as they were, in fact they're pretty safe. Certainly when compared to any other large British cities, and certainly worse than the two areas that you've mentioned, not that they're desirable.

I also think it's relevant if it's a day or night visit you are considering, possibly.
Id feel safe in some areas in the daytime but wouldn't venture near under darkness.

I'd go with matrix's list as the ones to watch but I wouldn't write anything off on the basis of postcode. Like all punting keep your wits about you, park a distance away, be prepared to walk past/walk away, carry nothing your not prepared to lose.

But to be honest, youll be able to find an acceptable hole in Edinburgh city centre without having to do trainspotting tourism.
