Author Topic: Cardiff Traffic - is it worth punting whilst Champions League is here?  (Read 1294 times)

Tried getting to a punt tonight...traffic was dreadful. Had to reluctantly cancel

Cardiff cannot cope with such an influx of people....and it's not even the final day yet!

Anyone else tempted to postpone punting until after this jamboree is over? Same girls will be here and maybe cheaper...

Offline mrdiamond77

I will be going nowhere near Cardiff this week and weekend.  I will punt again sometime next month.

I have one planned for tomorrow - wish me luck!

Castle Street was closed mid afternoon and won't be re-opening until Monday morning, so traffic around town is going to be a nightmare.  Loads of road closures in the Bay as well from tonight.

Parts of town are gridlocked now, what did thay expect, normal working day , so let's shut a load of roads, castle st is closed so thay can put a bridge over it, do it at night, fuckwods !

Offline Bibbob

As far as I'm concerned Cardiff is a no-go area until Monday. Besides, there's plenty of non-Cardiff girls to go for, head out of town for a bit.

Still not sure why they need a bridge over Castle Street.  It's shut for the duration anyway??

Any recommendations Bibbob?

It is a major event involving 200,000 visitors, both crowd management and security is to the forefront.

It has been planned for many months and living in the Bay planning has been required.

It's four days of mayhem but both the financial gain and future tourism promotion will bring tourists and secure jobs in the city, nothing but good can come from it.

People and businesses in the Bay have made their plans to work around and over the closures.

I have no interest in football but will enjoy the street party in the Bay.

I've not got BT TV , ( and refuse to pay for it ) so have to find a pub that's not so full I can't get to the bar or see the tv !

From my apartment to the local coffee shop in Mermaid Quay, approx 400 meters on foot, six pedestrian security points to pass!

No problems and little delay.

As well as the local supermarkets removing all alcohol in glass bottles from the shelves today, in the coffee shop drinks only being sold in cardboard takeaway cups, no china cups allowed.

The first 'Masters' match is underway on the floating pitch.

It's amazing , who's footing the bill ? For all the security ? You have to show I D ( passport etc) just to get in to work, don't think those ( shop ) workers will be getting many customers over the next 3 days .

I think the revenue fed into the local economy from 200,000+ visitors will more than cover the costs.

Customers, they were queuing to the front door in Starbucks this morning at 7am!

Many restaurants are already fully booked!

The atmosphere down here is already great and still growing.

Maybe the 200,000 people coming here and overflowing all our local companies with more business then they've ever seen? This whole thing is profitable for Cardiff there is no "bill".

But if you're asking who's responsible for the security it's a cross between UEFA and South Wales Police depending on the situation.

I live in the City Centre and trust me the ID thing won't stop anyone, the streets were sardine packed at 8am today.

I love the fact that as I approach some of the security posts that I keep passing a police man welcomes me by my first name :)

Easy for me to say as I don't live in Cardiff. And won't venture there this weekend. Not least because I don't like football

But I'm delighted the event has come to Wales and, like CB and others, can only see financial benefits from it

Coming up next after a review os the UKP traffic report lol

Don't get me wrong, this is great for Cardiff , and long may these things come to our home, but that que out side of Starbucks wont be paying for security,  workers wages apart the profits won't be staying in Cardiff, but it is a great thing, I'll be in a pub, well outside the city Centre .

Yes much will go to corporate finances but it will pay for Cardiff jobs and those people will spend their hard earned in Cardiff and so finance a few more Cardiff jobs.

Additionally the competition is broadcast world wide and like the Ryder Cup, the NATO Conference and other large events like the Rugby World Cup potential tourists will see what South Wales and Cardiff have on offer, bringing more tourist revenue.

I feel that for the few days of inconvenience these events are well worth the trouble.

Next year in the Bay we will be a host post of the Volvo Around The World Yacht race, that will be very big money!  Some one in the City Council is very innovative.  All to the good IMO.

I agree, let's enjoy it, well from a distance at least .

Offline mrdiamond77

I agree that it will be great for Cardiff and Wales.  Don't know if anyone knows but the CL Final should be free for all Sky customers.  I managed to watch the Europa League final, albeit in standard definition, so hopefully the CL final will be no different.

Going from the edge of the bay to Maindy for a punt, the traffic wasn't too bad during the day. I think if you plan on going from one side of Cardiff to the other west-east (or vice versa) during the rush hour period (3-7pm) then it'll be a nightmare, but any other way around shouldn't be much worse than normal.

But it's only 4 days before things are back to normal and the girls return.

Might I ask who you went to see? That's my preferred area to go for a punt :)
