Author Topic: Recent business IT issues - Coincidence?  (Read 1466 times)

Been quite a few IT issues mentioned on the news in the last few days or week
1st it was McDonalds then both Tesco and Sainsbury had problems with online deliveries and accepting card payments, as soon as I heard about Sainsbury quick on the back of McDonalds I wondered if it's some sort of hack and then the same day I heard Tesco were having the same / similar issues and thought it too much to be purely coincidence

And now Greggs are experiencing similar problems with card payments

Yep I reckon its some form of vulnerability in a 3rd party thats being covered up

I wonder if they use the same IT systems from the same supplier and they've had problems with doing updates to it.

Cyber attacks are quite high atm.
Some companies are being hacked and their email addresses being used to contact government departments.

Constant issue at my workplace.
We even have internal IT folks making up phishing emails, which we have to report. If you can 'click" on the email you'll be reported and have to complete some online training etc.
I wonder what foreign state could want to do such things  :hi:

Russians and Chinese are trying to hack everything they can at the moment.
Medical records, employment records, pension records, bank records, spending history, legal records, put that lot together with what's available on social media sites (especially regarding relationships, club membership and political affiliations) and it all adds up to a massive dataset with which to blackmail people

The weakest point for any system is a human. At least a bug can be patched. What do you do with the human? Those training courses never seem to work.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I’d say this is likely to be a cyber attack originating in China or Russia. It’s just too much of a coincidence now.

All systems are undoubtedly under constant threats of external attack, but all the companies involved recently have stated the issues were of their own doing in that their third party software companies, had caused the issues with software upgrades and the like.

Of course if you like conspiracies you will choose not to believe them  :D

Maybe their software is provided by Fujitsu ?9

Stripe and other payment providers have been experiencing problems recently, possible cyber attack.  This is what happens when you save money over using redundant systems.

As long as this site doesn't crash we'll be OK.  :D
( although I'm a bit concerned about Greggs  :scare:)

If Greggs go bust it may be beneficial: help the fatties lose weight

I used to work somewhere that someone clicked on some sort of malware in a file they received, it locked the computer and they wanted a shitload of Bitcoin to unfreeze it.

Fortunately it was the MD who opened the file

Apparently he opened it because he was so much busier and had so much more to do than anyone else, yeah right
The IT guys reckoned a 10 year old would have worked out it was a dodgy file before opening it but we all had to do training  :sarcastic:

I thought it was a bit odd when I tried to buy a sausage roll with my American Express Centurion Card and it was declined.

Never ever open an attachment, and if in doubt, just bin it and report to IT.

Those random PDF files people get these days are so dangerous. They can hi-jack your browser session, so if you are the type who uses the stay logged in option on a website, you're basically fucked. They will have access to everything! I've seen it happen to people and it is crazy how a simple PDF with a few malicious instructions buried in the code can be so effective.

At some point they should just call it a day and close down.
