Having just had an open groin hernia op 12 weeks ago ive now been diagnosed with 2 kidney stones 4mm and 5mm in size
Im waiting to speak to gp for either referal and or treatment via them
Im nearly 63 never had them before so your experiences of what to expect much appreciated
I gather treatment via meds /ultrasond shockwave would be preferable to last resort surgery
thanks to all

I've had one. It hurt like hell. It felt like someone had stuck a knife in my side and twisted it for about 2 weeks.  I had the full rigour (shaking and a cold sweat where my shirt would end up soaked with sweat) for 2 days. GP told me if I'd gone to see him while I had it he would have sent me straight to hospital.

They did the Jacob's basket procedure on me where they put a tube with a basket type thing on the end through my penis all the way up to my kidney and tried to grab the thing. They never found mine and the symptoms cleared up, so they decided I must have passed it.  They didn't do a contrast x-ray again to see if it was still there.  Not had any problems since and I drink lots of water now.  I do find if I don't drink enough then my kidney aches. Op took about 1 hr and I was out of hospital the next day after they confirmed I was passing fluids properly. Cathered for the night with a bag.

I think ultrasound is now the preferred way but it depends on the size and location of the stones. You'll be fine once they've treated it.

Having had a kidney stone myself and an operation to remove them there can be a number of foods that can cause a build up of the acid that can cause kidney stones. For example beetroot, and rhubarb are just of couple of things to avoid. Drinking plenty of lemon or cranberry juice can help you avoid getting kidney stones. Ultra sound is a medical procedure which means you will have to go into hospital to have it carried out under a general anesthetic.  I have sent you a personal message which will give you more details . Best thing I will say is don't worry about it.  (no punting for a few weeks is another downside)

I got mine from drinking too many fizzy soft drinks for years and years. I've switched to water and no recurrence.

Yes another thing to avoid  Hernia ops and kidney stones are a sign of getting older unfortunately,  strangely enough women are less likely to suffer from kidney stones than men  :unknown:

Im mid 40s been drinking 1.5 litres off water a day for years, fizzy drink only couple off times a week still manged to get one. :unknown:

By the time they sussed out what it was after scans etc and sent me to urologist appointment months later. He done another scan said it passed, so good to go.

Tried 3 litres off water a day after that but needed to constantly go for a piss so on 2 to 2.5 litres a day and hoping the painful barsterds don't come back.

I had one a few years ago. Went to A & E late at night spent next day in hospital waiting to be transferred to another hospital for a stent I think it was to be put in but no theatre time to do it. Next day I was not in so much pain so was sent home.

Luckily I had private medical care at the time. Saw a consultant within a few days and then went to a private hospital in Central London for ultra sound treatment one afternoon. No need for general anesthetic, local if you were in pain, I didn't have it. All done in a few hours. Touch wood not had another one yet, but once you get them they can come again.
