I like my punting phone like I like my ladies: smart, petite and cheap.

I'm looking for a new phone for punting given my current iPhone 5S is grinding to a halt and WhatsApp has stopped working.

Before I splash out on a second hand iPhone SE, are there any better alternatives? I want it to be as cheap (and small) as possible but something that'll run WhatsApp and some kind of map software.

I'm not after a £5 Nokia brick derivative. Budget is around the £20 mark.

Didn't know 2nd hand iPhone SE only worth £20

They aren’t, still worth £80/100 from what I have seen online.

If you can get one for £20 more power to you

When I bought a new android, my old one became my punting phone.

Some say not the wisest idea but I’ve never had any issues. The important thing for me is my punting SIM card that has absolutely no details on it whatsoever.

Your old phone will have IMEI number. This can be traced back to your old "non punting sim". Obviously its for punting so no biggie - but it can still be traced back to you.

I bought my dual sim cheap chinese android punting phone with cash - off a stall dealer. Sim as well. And top ups paid with cash. Minimises trace back-ability.

I remember reading about the essex lorry immigrant smuggling. One of them had an anon phone and sim - couldnt be traced. Eventually they found out where he got his cash top-ups. And found a cctv with him on - bang, got a face!

Sometimes I wish I went into police criminal investigations as a career. But pay is apparently shit and too much paperwork

There's always some way they can get you!

Another way an "anonymous" phone can be traced is by linking its location with a registered phone, so if you carry your normal phone and punting phone, there will be a correlation between which cell towers they are connected to at the same time.  Takes a bit of work and is not 100%, but can be done and linked with other investigative techniques.  Of course you need to have attracted the attention of someone with the capability and inclination to do that, so hopefully not a problem for anyone here.

go to your local used electronic goods high street shop the will have something

electronically phones can be traced and monitored by the authorities, mapped to the similar movements of another phone you carry, that is linked to you, traced and all sorts so it is naive to believe you can avoid being found if you use a phone via any public pone network, your phone movements can also be mapped against ANPR vehicle tracing, the authorities can overlay and map these things and we are all recorded multiple ways every day. this sort of thing is used routinely in crime detection.

If you get a 1st gen 32GB version from an eBay auction, I’ve seen them go for £20-£30.

I hope you reset the old phone and logged in using a different email address (a punting email) rather than logging into both using the same email. Otherwise you will find synchronisation of information goes on between the two phones.

Virtually useless but may still send messages and make calls

I am not super techy but yes I did reboot the phone to factory finish and used a new email address.

I am sure if I were doing dodgy stuff the police could probably find me, but all I want is the legitimate requirement to be forgotten by the wg five minutes after I have left the building.

Spot on

On iphones in the shop when its turned on you can look at the battery health
Nothing worse than mobiles which die rapidly

Mobile / ANPR monitoring is the centre of crime detection
And so it should be
Getting the tanks emptied by an SP is a million miles below the radar of the rozzers / security services

It makes me laarf when people think a PAYG is untraceable
Most times your punting phone is very close to your main one, different pockets

Simple steps pay cash for the mobile & the same for top-ups
If you are worried about anything more maybe its the wrong sport for you
The biggest risk for those with OHs isnt the security services or Sergei, its the OH finding it !  :scare:
