Is it just me or are cars getting bigger and fuller front grills all of a sudden.

I mean the new BMW's....talk about lip filler.

they keep putting more powerful engines in, and packaging them tighter and tighter... but yes some of the recent bmw and audi look stupid and ugly :s

Yeah, seems to be the latest trend having big front grills makes the car look ugly imo.

These trends come and go, and not always on "premium" cars, or cars that work.

The only make of car a large radiator grill looks good on is a Rolls Royce or Bentley

Engines are smaller than before, to meet emission standards, but to keep up the power they are getting close to race engine tolerances with more use of turbo charging on petrol engines, most diesels run low pressure turbo.

To keep things cool, and feed the turbo, there are coolers for engine and gearbox oil, intercooler, radiator, air con rad and condenser, all crammed into the front all fighting for cool air.

For example, a 300 Mercedes petrol was always a 3 litre, now it is 2, but power needs to match.

I actually like the look of a big front grill, makes a car look sporty; fast and mean with snarling teeth

On the other hand take a look at EV's which look weird from the front as no grill

Which reminds me  of the  ill-fated Ford Edsel, supposedly binned because the radiator grille  looked like......

A lot of it is making lower models look like the big power ones, which need a lot more cold air, though they also need more because of how the power is obtained with smaller engines and emission systems sucking it away.

With you on EV,s, the fronts look awful, but cold air is not required and batteries def. do not need it, some sort of dummy grill would look much better.

A classic case of design to suit the engine, External Link/Members Only.

Maybe a bit biased, I have one, but the original design, which was planned to have a V8 as the flagship, was altered to fit a long straight six, External Link/Members Only

Personally I think EV's would look better with a grill but quite a few of the "Eco" warriors see them as a badge of honour, a bit like the green section on the number plate.

I did watch a few videos online about 6 months ago where they had some really high performance EV rally and track cars which let's face it is worth getting into now as it's the future.
Anyway these things had massive batteries which were being discharged in about an hour and the problem they had was the batteries over heating  :scare: I believe they were having to install big fans to stop the things catching fire  :scare:

Cold is the enemy of any battery, leave a lead acid battery on a concrete floor and it will kill it over a short time, heat is also a problem, and fast charging produces heat.
Same for your phone, if you never fully charge it, like charging overnight, and never let it die, the battery will remain good for years.

If you have ever charged a lead acid battery, the charger will do it slowly, the last 10 or 15% takes much longer than getting it to usable charge, it is the same for EV,s, if you read the small print, it says never let it die or charge 100%, it shortens battery life, yet they get away with range claims that are based on 100% charge.

If you use one of those starter chargers, or jump leads, on a very flat battery, heat will be produced, inside the battery, at the terminals and through the cable.

They are racing EV,s and overcoming problems, because it sells cars and is the in thing, or they would like it to be, whether it is the future for mainstream motorists remains to be seen.

high charge or discharge causes heat, and the batteries only have a smaller thermal window, and lower temps to be happy vs a normal engine.
a normal engine can be happy at say 80-90c, while a battery normally was under 50c? so the cooling is less effiecent.

Makes sense, if high charging rate causes heat, fast discharge will too, and probably destroys the things quickly too. Making driving the things fast an expensive hobby.

At least you know the 120 quid tank of fuel is likely to be your only expense, except shorter service intervals, a new battery pack will hurt.

Not true, you can charge a Tesla or any other EV to 100% if you want

Tesla do NOT tell people to never charge to 100%

Yes you can, but it is not recommended as it reduces battery life, as does running it low, which is why Tesla recommend 90% charging and not using fast chargers unless you have too, slow charging and within 10-90% extends battery life.

Regular everyday 100% charging and regular use of fast chargers will show in data and could stop a warranty claim.

So why make the claim that so can't charge a Tesla or any other EV to 100%

You can hate EVs and Tesla all you want  but please stop with the lies and bullshit

Me too. I like the angry look some of the newer beamers and Audi’s have. Makes them look like a ferocious beast on the road. Compare it to Minis or Fiats.. they look like shit my grandma would probably drive
