New speed cameras will go live on a stretch of the M4 in Newport later this month, the Welsh Government has confirmed.

The new cameras are currently being installed between Junction 24 (Coldra) and Junction 28 (Tredegar Park) and will begin operating on March 15.

The speed cameras are part of a new "50mph Average Speed Enforcement" system planned to improve congestion in the area.

Work to install the cameras began on Monday, with closures planned to be taking place between J24 and J28 over the next two weeks.

The stretch of road will be closed in the eastbound direction between March 1 and March 5, and westbound between March 8 and March 12.

The closures will be in place overnight, between 8pm and 6am the following morning.

The Welsh Government has stated that the speed cameras are then expected to be in place and operational by Monday, March 15.

Obviously the current queues at the Brynglas Tunnels aren't long enough!!!!!!

They work unbelievably well on the section through Port Talbot.. and you have no idea whether they are live or not..

The ones at Port Talbot are live, but there's still queues there most of the time (or was prior to lockdown).

At the moment for Newport it's a Golden age where there are no cameras active/working between Tredegar House and the Coldra.

The queues in Port Talbot are caused by the stupid placement of the on/off junctions not caused by the cameras...the cameras have slowed everybody down.. nobody speeds there anymore

Useful info to know when I resume punting in Cardiff coming from Monmouth as I do.
I already got 3 points on my licence returning back from Newport from a punt a couple of years ago. I took the points rather than explaining away a Speed Awareness course.
It may be quicker to walk coming into Cardiff on some sections FFS !
