Anybody else into shooting? I’ve been clay shooting for 30 years now and just this last year I bought an air rifle to get rid of some rats at work, took it to the range to zero the scope and enjoyed it so much I bought a pcp air rifle purely for target shooting.

Yes, I shoot, No where near as much as I would like.

I done my DSC a few years ago. When the weather is good I go clay shooting a couple of times a month and stalking once a month.

Do you need a license for an air gun?
Below 12ft/lb no licence needed above that and a firearm certificate is needed. NB I believe in Scotland an Air Weapons Certificate is needed to posses, use or purchase even a sub 12ft/lb air gun.

I have been a keen clay shooter for the last 30 years but not so regularly for the past 5.
Last year I nearly gave up as my license was up for renewal and you now have to get a letter
from a doctor who can confirm you are a responsible person with no mental health problems etc.
So I walked into my doctors practice and asked the receptionist if my doctor or any other there would
write the letter for me and I'm not joking she nearly fell off her chair and in a raised voice said
'No doctor here will agree to that and we do not participate in assisting firearm license applications'

To cut an even longer story short I had to then obtain a full record of my medical history and with the help
of one of the shooting groups find a doctor to assist me which I luckily did and he kindly only charged me
£50 (he could've charged a lot more) as he is also a clay shooter.

My friend who shoots with me has given up his license this year because of the hassle which I believe
is the objective for all of us in the long run.

My license was always dealt with in Firearms Dept Guildford Police HQ but that shut down last year and
I had to apply to Sussex Police in Lewes but I believe the same doctors letter is required nationwide now.

Shooters unite and persevere and don't let them win!

I like shooting too :drinks:
Have been to West London Shooting School a few times when I was in London, a pretty decent place!

I recall providing a doctors reference was voluntary, but as the FLO said it would be viewed as having something to hide if not supplied.
Not recommended.

Actually thinking on, with the current criteria for being a suitable person to possess firearms I wouldn’t hold much hope of keeping any if caught punting. Drunken driving and motoring offences are now taken into account. Even bloody spud guns are frowned upon nowadays.

Offline Chopper73

Hi, I’ve got a Weihrauch Hw97  .177 air rifle it’s very accurate, takes out rats really well.
Very heavy and only spring loaded but really good gun - next choice would be a more expensive gas charged rifle

In 30 years of holding a shotgun license it was never suggested to me to provide a
voluntary doctors letter upon renewal of license every five years.
You only had to provide two photos of yourself one being endorsed by (such as) a school teacher, a doctor
or even another license holder etc. known to you but not a police officer bizarrely.
Now as I said before it is mandatory and will cause a problem to a lot of shooters as it did me last year.

Different constabularies have their own guidelines and interpretations, some worse than others. we just have to go along with them.

a friend I know has shot all his adult life, holding the relevent license etc, last few years he has had severe depression which then made him panic about getting the green light when his last one expired

he had to have an open and honest conversation with the doctor and then the police officer re his condition and if he has ever had suicidal thoughts etc

end result was that he got the license so it seems there is still some common sense in the system in places and not just a blanket approach

Yes, I shoot clays occasionally, but I don't have a shotgun license yet. Used to shoot .22 LR as well. I also have a CO2 air rifle and a few air pistols. Lots of semi-auto airguns available nowadays and are good fun.
