Author Topic: Thread Removal  (Read 1003 times)

Offline Vice Admiral

Since I have been a member of this site, I have had three threads that I started removed, presumably by one of the moderators.

The first and second cases seemed to me very marginal, but I think that I worked out where the removal man was coming from; and obviously I accept that his decision is final.

In the most recent case, however, I am at a loss as to the reason for removal.  The thread-starting post in question was a piece of entirely harmless light verse.

In the first version (posted on Tuesday) I did, however, use the word “Asian” for the origins of the corona virus, mainly because it rhymed with “isolation” and “nation” – and after the removal took place it occurred to me that this may have been the reason.  (I know that the word “Chinese” has been removed from one or two virus-related posts.)

So I duly rewrote the verse in question, removing any reference to the origin of the virus, and using “vacation” for the third rhyme – in the confident expectation that this time my thread would be safe.

Not so.  It bit the dust yesterday!

Now I imagine that thread-removal is a fairly rare event.  Would it therefore be reasonable to suggest that it become a routine that the person who does the removing sends the thread-starter a brief message explaining why the post that started the thread was regarded as unacceptable?

Then thread-starters would know where they stood for future reference!

Your card is obviously marked, as a seditionist, antagonist, agitator, 5th Columnist and general all-round bad egg.

I'd keep a low profile for a bit if I were you  ;)  :D.

Offline GingerNuts

Were your previous threads as "off topic" as this one?

Drat!

I am indeed all those things.  But I thought that I'd successfully concealed the fact.

Nope.  They were 100% on topic.

All those things are actively encouraged here, but only in a sexual sense, and even better if paid-for .

Nope.  They were 100% on topic.
"Coronaverse" is a play on Coronavirus and they can result in a ban if posted on the main board. Poems about punting are not really punting related. Why not just post it in off topic along with the joke thread and the like.   :unknown:

It was made very clear when off topic was reinstated that any off topic subjects that were posted on the main board would be deleted and not moved.

Would you have posted such poetry and though it was relevant to punting prior to this virus situation.     :unknown:

Offline winkywanky

They weren't posted in Off-Topic? That's a bit silly .

Even Shakespeare or Keats would have realised Off-Topic is the place for that stuff.

No, posted on the main board.  About isolation and when punting will resume, yet not CV-19 related apparently.

I feel sure a lesson has been learned.

If I'd used a different title, would my thread have survived?

(The pun, as I indicated at the top of my “thread-starter”, is that of the Times diarist, who has been printing “Coronaverses” for the past couple of weeks.)

Poems about punting are not really punting related.

A poem about punting is surely by definition punting-related?  Shakespeare’s King Lear is written almost entirely in verse, but is definitely King Lear related.  My verses may not be quite up there with Will’s stuff, but verse is as legitimate a medium for expressing ideas as prose.

Would you have posted such poetry and though it was relevant to punting prior to this virus situation.     :unknown:

Indeed I would. I’ve several times thought of doing so – but I suppose it was the Times offerings that inspired me to take the plunge.

Why don’t you allow me to re-post under a different title, and let members of this site decide?  They're all consenting adults, and almost all are legendary for their taste, discernment and good judgement.

And then everyone will know what we’re talking about!

If I’m then shot down in flames, well, worse things happen in war.

(Actually, come to think of it, being shot down in flames is something that usually only happens in war...)

Just post it in Off Topic. Simples

Surely this is just all ego driven BLX?

But, Doc, it's not off-topic.  It's a punting-related post that happens to be written in verse.

I suppose everything anyone ever writes is to some extent ego-driven.

As for BLX, well, that's in the eye of the beholder.

Anything Coronavirus-related is to be posted in Off-Topic now, did you not realise that?

Offline Vice Admiral

Anything Coronavirus-related is to be posted in Off-Topic now, did you not realise that?

The popular virus-related thread Will WG’s come back when this is over? was started on 4 April, nearly three weeks after the ban on new corona virus threads was introduced.

Why wasn't that removed?

Offline winkywanky

You're right, everyone hates you  ;)  :D

You're right, everyone hates you  ;)  :D

It would certainly appear to be the case!

Offline winkywanky

I feel sure not  ;).

A thread entitled: Will WG’s come back when this is over? is I guess more overtly punting-related?

I wouldn't take it personally, considering some of the gormless drivel which gets posted here, I don't think you've been in any way blackballed.

Offline Moby Dick

Oh how I do like to read a good verse.
Please don’t be offended if I sound Terse.

But should this thread also be in Off Topic?  :unknown:
Since you are coming across as a bit of a D....

A poem, wot you just rote .

But, Doc, it's not off-topic.  It's a punting-related post that happens to be written in verse.

To be honest I read it and thought it borderline and that it may get deleted? If it was in off topic I wouldn't have questioned it.

If it's any consolation there have been a great many new threads deleted in recent times. I wouldn't take it personally. Lighten up  ;)

PS None of mine are ever deleted ... because I never start any  :D

It was not a thread about punting, as in punting in the here and now, it was a poem about not being able to punt because of the virus, it also questioned when punting would return.

The title is irrelevant the subject matter alludes to the situation we are in now, IE in lockdown because of the virus. This is not open for debate it is off topic and that is it.

You could not have posted it before because the subject did not exist, punting was carrying on as normal.
