Author Topic: Kik - a warning/other’s experiences?  (Read 2260 times)

Offline Daffodil

Kik is a messaging app, similar to whatsapp or whatever, but you don’t need to give it your mobile number. Instead you choose a username and that’s how people find you...ie. they need to know your username. You do give it your email also, but I obviously used my punting email, and you can give it access to your contact list, which I declined.

I’d noticed some girls had started to ask to converse through it so checked it out. Through the relatively brief reading I did about kik, it seemed anonymous. All the other user could see is your username.

So, probably stupidly, I decided to use it on my personal smartphone just for the ease of it.

Anyway, I matched with a girl on a hook-up app, switched to kik at the girl’s request, messaged a bit more. We met up, had my usual 30 minutes, not much chat, and I left. The next day she sends a message simply saying, “you are a ...?” and named my job.

Now I suppose it could have been a lucky guess, or perhaps something I said alluded to it but I’m very suspicious that Kik “outed” me. But I don’t know how. Even if it did land me up on “people you may know” on facebook or whatever, my privacy settings are pretty stringent if you’re not a friend and I never mention my job on social media anyway. It has really perplexed me.

Be interesting to hear other’s thoughts and experience of Kik and if something similar has ever happened to them. At least be careful if you are using it.

Biggest alleged problem with Kik is that it appears to be the kiddyfiddlers method of choice for contacting children.

Kik will harvest your contacts from your phone and any social media it detects.  Likewise any social media apps you have installed may note the kik install and try to integrate with or without your permission.
Did you post a profile pic?  That could've been scanned and associated with matches in other social media on her phone.

That's why you must use a punting phone and if it's a smartphone then NEVER re-use photos published in your RL personas, use punting id's for all services used and no checking your RL accounts from a browser or saving RL account details in your punting browser.

When you use kik the information you can see about the other person is the name they gave when they registered the account and the kik id and the profile pic. So long as you used all fake details then there is no obvious way that she would be able to get any fix on you. Equally obviously if you did use any of your real info then she would have knowledge to that extent and possibly able to find more about you.
So my understanding kik is anonymous if you use it as intended.
You are suspicious of kik but how about the app you used to contact her , what details were exchanged using that , the details you have to give kik are minimal and should all be fake , presumably signing up to a dating app you have to give certain information for registration and some of that information has to be verified so if your suspicions lie anywhere id have thought they should be better directed at your dating app or somewhere other than kik.
Is it possible you inadvertently dropped something work related when you were with the girl and she later picked it up.

Since you denied access to your phone contacts did you re-use an existing username from other services?

I think all Apps are dodgy, I was asked by an SP to contact her by an App. I told her I only had an ordinary punting phone. When I met her I questioned her why she wanted me to contact her through an App, and her reply was, It's amazing what you can pick up about a punter from an App.

It is utterly insane to use stuff like kik, Facebook, what's app, insta etc to converse with escorts on your main/personal phone unless you don't mind them finding out who you are.
I do have most of the above but only completely ringfenced on my punting smartphone which has zero connection to "real me" whatsoever.

Spytoapp may or may not work but in any case it requires the installer to have physical access to the target device and download and install the monitoring app on that device.  Not a circumstance that is really applicable to a punter/hooker scenario. It is more designed for parents monitoring their children or a suspicious partner spying on their other half.

No, genuinely first time I’d used the nickname and I didn’t upload a picture.

Agree, stupid to have used real phone. Lazy, schoolboy error!

Interesting what you say about it interacting with other apps and vice versa. Lesson learnt!

Just to say;  even a full reset of a mobile does NOT get rid of whattsapp.   I cannot figure out how that can happen unless w'app is deliberately constructed to be  a dangerous player disguised as a useful tool.  Nasty stuff.

Indeed, don't forget it backs up to the cloud so you can restore your chats if you replace your handset or number.

As it happens I tried using share whilst browsing a webpage and selected via WhatsApp and it offered me a number of contacts both named and just numbers that weren't on my phone anymore!  So it appears to be using a cache for that operation rather than the live data in my contacts list.  I couldn't find an option in the app to flush that extra data.

Used my own phone a bit ago to contact a girl, had no issues afterwards but seeing her blatantly crop up on FB as someone I might know reminded me not to be so daft and get the punting phone back in action.
