Came across some articles about Amsterdam at night. A Google search shows up loads of news reports about how dangerous the city centre is at night.

I was there earlier this year.

Certainly didn’t feel at all concerned for safety, in fact there are so many tourists around I felt very safe. Awful place to punt tho.

RLD has always had a rep at night, whether it’s deserved depends on where you’re visiting from

Offline willis50

just returned and no problems at night what so ever, biggest problem is the people standing staring!

Offline Gazza006

Been once a year for around 15 years.  Never seen much trouble at any time of night.  Mostly just the English being pests/drinking too much.
The street dealers won’t bother you.
Horrible place to punt.

My experience was slightly different ....

Went in June with 2 other couples and the first night we were there went out for a lovely meal and walked back to our Hotel, which was in the Centre of Amsterdam.

As we walked through back up the "Spuistraat" street we were chatting and looking in the windows (as you do!) when I was approached by a guy who seemed a happy chap and wanted to 'high five' me ... thought it strange, but not wanting to be a killjoy in a foreign city I gave him a high five and walked away with my friends who all saw this and were laughing at us  ... I think it was only 20 seconds later I felt my side trouser pockets and realised my wallet was missing ... :scare:  ... asked my OH if she had it, but of course she didn't, looked around and the guy was long gone !! Lost my cards, and about 500 Euros in cash .

Obviously I felt a complete idiot ... but there were a large group of us in a pretty deserted street, and the main Police station was literally 100 metres away ! Went there to report the theft and was told the Police station was shut and to come back in the morning !! It was only 11pm, why was the station shut !!  Went back the next morning and was told it happens with tourists ... thanks !

The guy was Syrian/ Tunisian/ Morrocan looking (North African basically) and was clearly a proffesional, and probably works with others in that part of Amsterdam.

I guess the moral here is that all major Cities these days are targets, keep your valuables in the Hotel safe except for what you need on the night and wear tight fitting trousers (unlike my chino's). Fortunately for me, I managed to get my Insurance to pay back my cash and I cancelled my cards straight away that night, so could have been worse. Did rather spoil my few days away though  :(

Offline piotrskut

moral of the story is don't keep cash and cards in the same place.  I always take debit and a credit card out of my wallet and put them in a front pocket, as well as local currency in both, then i leave the wallet in the hotel room safe.  bastard pickpockets can't get it all

Offline Hallon

I tend not to use my debit or credit cards abroad, and leave them in my hotel.

I use the ‘CaxtonFX’ prepaid card, and have two cards attached to my account, one of which I leave in my hotel room in case I lose the other card.

‘Fair FX’ and others offer a similar service.

Much easier and safer IMO to load up the Caxton card, which can be used to withdraw money from an ATM and also as a debit card, and leave my usual cards in the hotel.

I can top up my Caxton FX account either online or via their easy to use phone app.

How the hell does a high five disguise taking a wallet from your pocket?

right hand to right hand slap - face to face
left hand dips

secret is to stop the thief approaching face on: position your body at an angle so you're not square on, and only his raised hand is close to you

even better solution is to growl "fuck off" as he approaches

Or even have that attitude as you walk, under your breath.

I used to live in a very rough area. The sort of place where a ‘friendly’ request for ‘a light’ was a way of getting up close to rob you.

I reckon there’s a certain way of walking through such areas (and every shitville is different). I watch how people walk with a “don’t fucking mess with me attitude” and go for something like that (I’m not much of a fist fighter but it’s more method acting — look hard).

I usually dress like locals. In some places, like black American hoods, I have the same attitude but try to look invisible (I’m not black so cannot pretend). In Copacabana, I believe in “360 degree vision”: without constantly looking round, I try to be aware of everything happening around me. If someone looks dodgy, cross the street, go into a shop or in last recourse, run. If I’m in an even more insalubrious area, I get up to get off the bus last so I can see if anyone’s trying to follow me (and if I’m doubt get off at the next stop).

Something else — for the more experienced: don’t hate the mugger. He/she is just doing what he thinks he has to do for a living. But hate, like any emotion, clouds the thinking process. You need clear, split-second reactions. A mugger will predict your emotion and use it against you. It makes you predictable, an easier target. Those who have some martial arts experience reserve any emotion for the strike itself, not the enemy.

London and Amsterdam are not the safest areas of their respective countries but they are child’s play by comparison. But even so I use clothing with zips, non-obvious pockets and only carry the money/cards I’m likely to need that day or evening.

In my younger says I’ve been robbed three times. Once in Edinburgh, twice in Rio (which subsequently became like a second home for me), and once invisibly in Europe (but by this time I was a bit smarter and scared the shit out of (the three) them — of at least unnerved them sufficiently to get my stuff back. Getting robbed can be a great learning opportunity. Before you go out, think, how would I rob me if I were a thief or mugger? When you see it coming you can stop it happening.

Not daft at all. I can hardly believe Americans, who are the worst. They swagger about with their telephoto lens, maybe a gold chain and nice wristwatch, a t-shirt with some Texas baseball team logo, and talk in a voice that can be heard down the street (just in case any muggers have dozed off).  They might as well have logged on to mug-me.com before leaving the airport.

They’ll have the streetmap unfolded trying to find which way up its meant to be while the wife consults her iPhone in a glitter case held delicately at arm’s-snatch length. Being 6’6” he’ll stare blankly over all the ‘natives’ until someone politely pops up and relieves him of his excess baggage.

Exactly correct !! Plus, he also did something odd with his left foot ... dangled it against my right leg so I guess I didn't notice any fumbling in my pocket. ... I know, I know, I was naive in the extreme, but he was so professional and happy/jokey that neither I, nor the other 5 of of my party had any suspicions until he'd gone ... and it was all over in 20 seconds !! Plus ... we'd had a long day travelling, and a good meal with some wine etc etc ... and were distracted. Typical tourists if you like, but not pissed and not in a particularly dodgy area ... I guess though that you're never to old to learn !

i have been many times over the past few years and i feel it is safer than ten years ago...  The government have actually done a good job of closing down the right coffee shops and red light areas and keeping the right ones open.. Its def safer than london and it is such an underrated city on the whole its one of my favourites.

Getting  mugged only twice in Rio is not even passing your initiation test . At least 5 times before you know the streets  :D People associate Rio with street violence but we have plenty of cunning snakes that will happily befriend you , spike your drink and lead you arm in arm to an ATM

Becareful of wearing those hoods Marmelade they will cut down your periphera view  and grab one and you can now lead the wearer on a merry dance of wherever and whatever you want to do  to them  :scare:

Technique 3 might take a bit of practise before you master it

What the f are you on about??

You do know what an American hood is don’t you?? Not something you wear — more like a favela though not quite the same. Full of rival gangs, drug dealers and black guys of different ethnic backgrounds often carrying guns or other weapons. But also the best strip clubs with full sex.

Now I’m not going to argue with a Carioca over who’s got robbed the most (but would love to hear your personal stories if you want to share). I could add several attempted robberies that were punting related. But I think that Rio robberies are maybe changing. In the old days they could be quite polite about it sometimes. When I had my wallet emptied they kindly left me R2 for my bus home. Now it seems the desperado touch is more common.

Thanks for the martial arts video but honestly, if you fight back when someone tries to rob you in Copa you’re a braver man than me. Watching people getting robbed on Nossa Senora or Barata Ribeiro is almost a hobby for some locals I know. My apartment was at the Leme end which has a slightly different scene and it was easy enough to get to know the cooler crims and befriend someone who did a bit of coke. We’d watch people getting stung coming out of Barbarellas or the police trying to sell us viagra, and feel like right cunts coming out of the late night Prado bar at 7am as respectable people went to work. But these days when I visit I tend to stay in Lapa. Just a lot cooler, less expensive, and handier for reasonably priced p4p.

You’re right about spiking drinks and stuff of course but that’s a beginner’s error. Copa’s not that hard compared to trashville Medellin. There you have to be super polite about refusing a fucking drink rather than just keeping the one you have with your hand near the neck of the bottle. And again though, some of the best trashville punting.

What’s happened to SP’s cracolandia? I heard they did something to pacify it that made it worse again or something ...

Now i understand the Hood , misunderstanding of your subject ! Apologises for the confusion .

Street robberies in Rio have changed depending upon who and how the Favelas were , which drug lords were in power and was money easy or hard to come by . Bus robberies later developed into drug gangs completely taking over a whole street and attacking pedestrians en masse . If a military policeman had recently been shot their presence would be high and the streets safer . A young robber does not want to be the Military Polices payback target . The favela street robber knows  that their victim may fight back and also if they get isolated from their gang of robbers the crowd will attack them . Many Cariocas carry secreted guns and in the past on Youtube there has been video of street robbers shot in the head  from an off duty policeman  or member of the public . This makes a gun or knife carrying fourteen year old , in havaianas , shorts and vest , who had just taken a line of coke very dangerous as he is knows people will attack him given the chance . Unlike this country and its police force and judiciary , vigilantes don't get prosecuted or arrested more likely given a medal . We don't have the english " do gooder " standing up for the rights of a criminal . All the Brasilian do gooders have been robbed so many times already they do not give a "fuck" for street urchins  :D Probably  best summarised with our saying " better to have a seat while you wait ". Things don't often change is Brasil and if they ever do they take a long time to happen !
Lapa has been gentrifyed ! Even Carlinhos de Jesus ( his only son got assinated in the street )  has owned  a club there for years with celebrities like Marcelo Chocolate and  Zeca Pagodinho performing there  ofcourse there is Circo Voador as well  . It beinging located close  to Santa Teresa it was always going to happen that the artists , musicians and bohemians would cultivate that area . No longer the area of prostitutes standing in doorways with their pimps hiding in the dark alleys and tourists having their loose change liberated  !!! Heard there is even an Irish bar there now  :scare:
S.P. is B.Ms ( Fica Frio ) playground and musa   :D so don't know of the political and social developments there but from my experience if a Carioca can "fuck" something up a Paulista will be able to "fuck" it up 5 times better ( pode crer ) :sarcastic: .

Thanks for your post and I think it helps to give some perspective when people here wail about ‘a kid getting shot’. Small gangs of kids in Copa no more than chest high have always been a problem in Copa but I was also in a bus that was subjected to an attempted highjacking by kids, late night on a slip road coming off Pres. Vargas. A swarm of them (kids, not teenagers), charged the bus head-on in a v-formation trying to force it to stop. I think everyone on the bus was praying the driver would have sense. He did, and accelerated, and the kids only dived out of the way at the very last minute.

I don’t know Carlinhos de Jesus personally of course but I attended his school in Botafogo to try and get some of my dances up to a passable standard and I’m sorry to hear about his son. I suppose I have an admiration for him as a choreographer and carnavalesco.
