Actually you have brought up a very good point and I must admit I have never really thought about it that way. Just avoiding touching the glans is not really sufficient to prevent a cross infection as for example an infectious herpes sore can be anywhere on the penis. Equally pre cum could contain an infection and be easily spread over the rest of the penis.
