Author Topic: Should Adultwork automatically search for copied photos?  (Read 389 times)

Following on from Scutty Brown's helpful post https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=380672.msg3887867#msg3887867 what is stopping AW from doing this automatically themselves before new profiles are allowed to be active, at least for the main photos on a profile, after all if there are some in a gallery of somebody different that should be fairly obvious.  Similarly if photos are changed, only show them after they have been checked (which in most cases with real photos is likely to be instantaneous).  Given its not completely overrun with fake photos I assume there is some checking going on.

I expect if Vivastreet started to do it, them that would remove the bulk of the profiles in some areas as it can be hard to spot the real ones from the fake ones (which is why I don't use it without a corresponding AW profile).

I think the logistics for them to do it would just be too high. Just too many to scan.
And it wouldn't be very comprehensive either as  many of the sources of photos used are poorly indexed. For example few of the Romanian escort and porn sites get properly indexed, as do few of the Japanese or Thai ones. Nor do subscription sites like Met-Art. All of those are commonly used.
Cost would be an issue as well as the people behind the search software would want paying for commercial use.

From experience of finding copied photos, it isn't always an instantaneous process. Thinking it looks fake and finding the matching image isn't always straight forward. Automated searches aren't conclusive.

The solution to a complex problem isn't usually one thing so there are probably a bunch of counter measures needed.

Maybe AW could ask profiles to reverify when they make large scale changes to their profiles ? that could be data driven and automated to keep the costs down.

I'd ask AW to bring in a bounty for every proven fake reported but that would just get abused. Pity, because if I had a credit for every fake I'd reported I'd be able to buy someone nice something good from their wishlist  :hi:

Instead you will have to make do with the eternal gratitude of UKP members. Thanks to all who make efforts in this area, which covers for my technical incompetence.

Should they do it? It would be helpful.
Will they do it? No, it's not in their interest.
