Selective quotes from the Wales Online article;

Police proposal for 'managed' prostitution zone in area of Newport - but will it turn it into 'Little Amsterdam'?

Police are behind a plan to introduce “managed” prostitution in a Welsh city amidst claims girls of 14 are selling sex on the streets for £2.

The project came to light after information was distributed at a Labour group meeting in Newport about the “Holbeck street sex working managed area” in the north of England.

The Newport scheme would aim to help prostitutes leave sex work, improve street sex workers’ safety and boost reporting of offences against prostitutes.

Police and politicians were “realistic about the fact that prostitution will always exist.”

“It has been shown that enforcement alone is not an effective solution,” the spokeswoman said.

I suspect there will be a traffic jam along Commercial Road later!  :D

It will make life easier for HMRC as well, as we know its all about the tax when it comes to government.  The private houses don't pay business rates by regulating, business rates will inevitably up the price of punting in the zone.

Makes life difficult for punters that are cheats to, get a speeding or parking ticket for that location everyone will know why you are there and also anyone spotting you.

As for the girls they might not want people to know what they do, well going to work everyday in the zone sure doesn't help them this way.

As for 14 year old's selling sex on the street, this is fucked up and wrong, but they will continue on the streets because they cannot work in the government managed zone.

The way that I see it the UK is up to a very important point in the sex industry. Just like internet dating and strip clubs the bad image of these places is being replaced with a more modern vibrant view socially. When you think of a 'escort' you no longer think about skinny crack addicts in a back alley. Certain politicans are trying to re-tarnish the image and the BBC are obviously trying to spark outrage in the tories by showing them that prostitutes live a good life for bad work. If the industry does not get banned in the next 6 years I can only see it growing larger and becoming even more socially acceptable. Just look at our UKP members.. growing in numbers day by day and we are now at 30,000+ visiting the site every day. Most of my work colleagues / friends punt - definitely would not have been the case back in 2008.

We could go either two ways - A more classy upmarket version of Germany or Sweden. Personally I do not see the tories going for a complete ban but might add in some sort of tax.

Don't kid yourself about this country's forward think attitudes to commercial sex. It's still a deep source of tiltilation and shame to have any connection to the sex industry here. Look at Scotland where Edinburgh's saunas are under attack from the Glasgow mob, or Northern Ireland where the usual alliance of fembots and swivel-eyed Christian loonies have pushed through their end demand nonsense criminalising paying for sex.

Don't think London is anymore tolerant. That House of Lords guy was a political nobody, but the mere fact he was spied on doing some banned recreational substances that just have a different molecular structure to some other recreational substances which are totally okay to use, in the company to two escorts, was enough to destroy reputation and career and warrent national humiliation. Harreit Harman is leader of the opposition. Do you think she would stand up for punters if the Tories take a hard line in response to this scandal?

I do believe in the long run that sanity will prevail in this country and we will get a German or New Zealand style-regime (they are legally different but both allow sex work), just as I believe drug decriminalisation will happen as it has in Portugal without it being the end of the world. After all the antis whinged about gambling, porn and strip clubs thirty years ago and now no-one bats an eye if a stag do goes to a casino and a 'gentleman's club'. As for porn the femenazis are on the back foot and divided amongst themselves there. I just don't think it will happen while I am still punting.
