I can stay pretty much anywhere within an hour's drive of "Sheepy Magna".

Sheepy Magna seems to be a desert for good hotels ... so I suspect punting there will be equally hard ... hence why I am looking further out...

Northamptonshire is circa 1hr 15mins away and has a number of parlours, independents and masseuse.

And yeah, Birmingham and Leicester would both be fine. As I'm travelling from the north, somewhere north and close to the M1 would definitely be better - so long as it's not a punting desert ;-)

If you want somewhere close to the M1, I'd look round Exit 25 Long Eaton. It's basically half way between Nottingham and Derby. That would give you two cities to choose from. Plus, there are a few hotels right by the M1. I'd avoid the two BW hotels in the area. The Long Eaton one has no room service and meals are only available in a diner next door. It's also only about 50 meters from the Motorway. The other (an old Hall) is just crap. Dirty rooms with half the stuff broken. That still leaves two hotels just in Long Eaton. They also tend to be cheaper than hotels in the centre of Nottingham or Derby.
