When I was driving through Middlesbrough over ten years ago I unintentionally (honestly!) stumbled across the red light district. I took a turning to make my way to the A19, and came across a street just lined with scantily-clad girls of all ages. It slwoly dawned on me that this must be the red light district I had heard about.

I happened to be in Middlesbrough again recently, and thought I would have a look at the girls on the street, not with the intention of picking any up, but just to have a look. I was VERY surprised to see no one. Not a single girl plying her trade.

I just wondered if street walking has been eliminated in the North East, or if anyone knows if it still goes on?

There is no need for girls to walk the streets anymore. All they have to do is go online. If you look at Adultwork you will see many prostitutes advertising their wares.

I see what you mean but disagree, for the following reasons. First of all, you're assuming that everybody is Internet savvy or even has the money for a computer. Secondly, it may not be practical for a women to use an Internet café. Thirdly, a lot of the women that work on the streets these days are druggies and have big personal problems. They're not going to find work in a parlour. They're not going to be that appealing, if they advertised on the Internet.

If you want to look a little wider, take a look at Holland and Germany. I was in Germany recently and whilst there are licensed brothels, there is still a street scene. The same in Amsterdam. One of the reasons for this is that the smack heads cannot find work any other way. If you're around the Amsterdam train station, very late at night, you'll see them. It will never be eradicated without eradicating the reasons why girls take those risks.

CCTV and the police targeting punters has killed the street scene, in many areas. With the many alternatives now available for punters and the threat of being 'named and shamed' publically, if caught, it would be a very risky enterprise. At one time, there were stunning girls to be found on the street but most have long since migrated to sites such as Adultwork, although many still provide car/outdoor fun and I can spot them a mile off.

I agree with the two posts above. The street scene used to have a mix of girls, OK I haven't punted on the streets for about 6 years now, but in the end it was just junkies who won't stand a chance of working any other way. What was once a guaranteed punt with plenty of choice became very much hit and miss, often with no girls out.

From the punters point of view the police became more serious in clearing things up (at least for a few months at a time), armed with CCTV and ANPR it just became far too risky.

I agree over here in Geneva prostitution is legal but still a healthy street scene.

Both Cleveland and Northumbria forces will stamp down on streetwalkers in their regions.  That is why none exist.

All valid points but the OP was talking about Middlesbrough and the North East of England, there may well be street walkers in other parts of the UK or Europe but it has been almost eradicated in this area.

There was always far more in Middlesbrough than say Newcastle but the Police had a big purge a while ago, they targeted punters/curb crawlers making it too risky. You may find the odd one now but not many, apart from anything else punters don't need to look for street walkers these days.

As far as I know there are no parlors as such in the North East only a few massage places where all you get in HR if your lucky.

I think if any prossie wants to make money here now they have to be on the internet

Point taken, but my post was more an explanation as to why they may have gone. On the specific point then, a quick 'Google' of recent reported activity suggests they're now in Stockton.

Preston has a very lively street scene though
Even in th afternoon they are on patrol and I've seen one at 530 am looking for the early shift workers

Not always obvious but if you catch their eye, quite often at busy locations, then you go from there.

Indeed. There are many areas, although it's a very high risk activity these days. With plenty of 15 minute quickie options about and women on adultwork who'll do car/outdoor fun, I think it isn't worth the risk anymore even though in it's heyday it was a massive buzz.

And many of these ex street whores are on Adultwork anyway or still do both.
