Author Topic: Laptop hacked & my AdultWork account accessed.  (Read 5626 times)

Offline Gustav Klimt

Been seeing this WG as regular for past year, but have had to stop due to overtime being stopped at work, so no punting funds. Last Monday she texted me to call her saying it is urgent. When I called her she accused me of posting a fake profile of her on AW & sending threatening emails to her via AW. I of course denied this, but she told me that AW informed her these were posted by my mobile number.
That evening when I ran a security check on my laptop & tablet I found some problems. Next day took it into IT repair shop to get it checked. They called me the day after to tell me that my system had been hacked & my files had been accessed, so someone had access to my AW account. Seems I had opened a dodgy email & that's how I was hacked. Because IT systems are linked they were able to access my laptop, tablet & phone. The IT guy did try to explain it to me, but I am not that tech savvy so most of it went over my head. Looks like this is how the WG was contacted as though from me.
I've now got all new security, firewall etc. Cost me £125 to get this sorted.
I texted the WG to tell her this because I wanted her to understand what had happened & that I was innocent & to apologise for my lack of security causing her stress, but now she is not replying to my texts. In a way I can appreciate that she may still be suspicious of me. Anyway lesson learnt to be much more security conscious.
Thought I'd post this just to advise guys you can never be to careful about security in this game.

thanks for sharing.

What did you open? An attachment?

It's very unfortunate I would say that your AW should not be linked to any personal email etc, but where you computer has been hacked like this, there isn't really much you can do

Even if your laptop/tablet/phone were hacked, How were they able to acces your AW account? They'd have to know your user name and password surely?

It would handy if you can find that email and pass on what it's called. This seems an extremely dangerous one and really needs highlighting.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Email attachments are a major source of hacking attempts and probably too numerous to count. The best is to avoid opening any attachment from an unknown sender or from someone clearly posing as an authentic sender ("amazon has a prize for you" etc). If you really want to keep up with them there's a free app called Cyber Security News by News Fusion. The U.S. have also just decided it's ok for ISPs to sell your browser history. A Firewall won't stop you clicking an email attachment.

sounds much more like your aw details/ log in details have been stolen maybe a "phishing scam" or by someone not happy about you seeing the WG .

It is very very rare someones actually gets "hacked"  (this mostly goes on in the government and corporate world ), 99% of the time its malware , ransom ware , phishing scam (you receive an e-mail from AW/PAYPAL/TALKTALK/AMAZON/YAHOO/HRMC claiming there is a problem with your account , log in and correct the detail (when you click on link to log in this is where you details are stolen)

Its very very unlikely you got hacked my friend (and just to upset a wg ? )    the IT shop probably seen you coming i am afraid  , 99% off pc equipment which is used to go online will have some kind on malware on (but its mostly low risk advertising , ect )  :hi:

You do not by chance have a OH who could be using a key logger ?

Quite frankly I would take everything this "IT Repair Shop" told you with a tub of salt. An expensive tub of salt that they can probably sell you.

AW informed her these were posted by my mobile number.

If they have done this then they have broken the law in quite a significant way and I don't see why they would do that.

From his internet browser cache. That's why i don't let my Opera to remember logins/passwords.
On a top o this they could install a keylogger in his laptop to steal all logins/passwords.

I find it hard to believe that someone would go to the trouble of hacking into his laptop just to steal his AW details to then send malicious messages to his regular.

If it was me? My first port of call to fall under suspicion over these sort of shenanigans would be the regular.

Or her pimp. Prossies, unless they are the techie variety, can be very lax with their stuff. Bear in mind they will often get a pimp or boyfriend to do their AW webpage, so he has their login details and access codes. I did one for a reg a long time in the and urged her to change the codes afterwards, just so if she got screwed I couldn't fall under suspicion. She stressed that she trusted me completely and implicitly. She also trusted her ex 'implicitly and completely' it seems, though forgetting she might have changed her mind after dumping him. Never let a prossie log on with your gear (it can produce a fake alias on your account) or use hers to log on.

There have been a number of claims of AW being hacked but I've not seen anything official, probably hasn't happened. I'm sure mumynuts would love to get access, as would anonymous (they've tried to 'bring down' UKP in the past and failed).

Security basically comes down to, 1) who and I protecting 2) what information from and 3) what are the consequences if they get it.  Each level of security engages different levels of hassle, so just work out what you need for your circumstances is the golden rule. But not opening attachments from unknown senders is another golden rule, for everybody. Wikileaks have just released details of the CIA's root hack for Mac devices. In 2008 they needed physical access to install Nightskies: things may have moved on. Once the exploit is discovered history suggests others will follow where the CIA leave off. However, if your only concern is to avoid your wifey knowing or a prossie targeting you, such high-tech hacks seem unlikely. Google, of course, keep all your browsing data, private facility (Opera) or not. If you need private browsing, DuckDuckGo or Disconnect are standards (which you can access from a normal browser). A Tor Browser goes a bit further, with or without the addition of a VPN, but using a VPN when you don;t need it has its own downsides. It can temporarily disrupt your wifi or your ISP (who can see you are using a VPN in nearly all cases) may strangle-reduce your data speed.

This is all standard knowledge, but if you want to post tips, please put them on he off-topic if you have access as that's less public (or send them to a member who has access).

If they put spyware on your laptop doesn't it send them all your saved logins or record what you enter? I don't open those links in the emails like (just seeing if one in my junk email)

Not got one - but saying you want to fuck tonight, click this link to my site. Don't because it's spyware download site.

something doesn't sound right in the original post.
He says a fake PROFILE of the girl was created, in which case how does she know its of herself? Were the same photos used? And how did she get information about the poster from AW- that would be confidential. Now if a fake REVIEW had been posted then that's more understandable. But as it stands the story doesn't add up.
I'd like a link to the profile of the girl who has complained, and also a link to the fake profile. Otherwise I'm inclined to believe the OP is being scammed by the girl or her pimp. Think about it - creating a profile using a mobile phone would be quite an achievement. Not impossible, but a PITA to do
Also the comment that the threatening e-mails were sent by his mobile phone number doesn't make sense. Not possible.

You've got to step back and think...... With billions of PCs out there and fuck knows how much data flying about every microsecond who and why would they bother to remotely access and delve amongst all the stuff on your laptop and target a random escort for some attention???? It defies all belief and logic. Anyway, whatever actually happened ultimately it's your device and your responsibility.

Offline SI-Marker

Hi all,

I have over the years had occasions where I couldn't purchase access to a girls private gallery. I would get an error message up stating:

The following problem(s) were detected:

Exchange Error: Source member and target member are not permitted to exchange credits.

Previously I was too lazy to even question it, but last night I decided I should look into why it was happening (mainly because the girl really looked hot and I wanted to actually gain access to her pg - bloody penis ruling again!!). Anyway, having ben sent on a circular wild good chase by the 'webmaster' at AW, I realised I really was getting nowhere and they appeared quite happy to continue sending me links to the site for 'help'. In the end I kind of lost it and asked them to answer the question, they never replied.....

Tonight I have had a meet with a girl I have met quite a few times and we get on. So I asked her if she knew what the who 'alias' thing was about. She then told me she had been meaning to tell me that I had Aliases and was amazed how many there are...... Over 6000!!!!

Now, I may be over reacting, but I've never had a second account. I have one negative feedback on my actual account and all the others are all positive. I see having the neg there as ok, at least I'm real.... So I thought.

This now concerns me hugely as the webmasters at AW would appear to really not give a funk and I don't really want to loose 20+ years of punting feedback due to an issue that is not of my making.

Has anyone else heard of, or experienced something this bad?

How could Adultwork know the telephone number of a smartphone used to access their site?  IP address, yes, but I very much doubt that the phone number would be detectable by them.  Probably only the phone company would have that information, and wouldn't pass it on without a police warrant.

Perhaps what they DID detect was the user's AW cookie left on either his phone or his PC.  But it all smells very fishy.

Interesting to hear when and how this gets resolved. I'd change my AW password first off. I use a mobile and several computers home and office to access AW and no problem. Multiple IP addresses, VPNs, might all cause a problem I reckon but the likeliest does sound like someone has passed on your password. Any prossie used your browser? Or have you accessed it from a public computer? Any problems with any other password stuff?

You could email AW tho no guarantee of reply these days. Aliases are supposed to drop off after 6 months.  I'll PM you another suggestion.

I'd go further. I don't open any attachments unless they are a known friend or person I'm doing business with at that time.

I recently ran a virus scanner (fairly unnecessary on a Mac but thought I'd give it a try). It found a few hundred viruses, all of them in email attachments.

Oh come on, you're not a newbie. Posts won't be deleted.

Go to a clean PC/smartphone/tablet. Change your email password, change your forum password. If you are able to do that then job done.

I go further in that I don't open attachments even from friends without giving them a quick virus scan unless there is something in the email that allows me to identify the person sending it - not time too consuming but well worth the alternative.  I have a number of friends/acquaintances who have had their email addresses and address lists hacked and then who knows what got sent.  Just a fortnight ago one of my email addresses was hacked and my ISP finally closed it because it was sending out huge numbers of emails.  It ceased to download or upload any messages in my Outlook because the hacker had changed the password so that it no longer communicated with my Outlook.  I called my provider and we were able to rectify it.

Offline eb0x

It seems quite unlikely that anyone hacked your laptop to get your AW account. AW does not hide usernames, so anyone who guessed or found your password could easily post that malicious review.

Assuming your password was not "Password", P455W0rd, Qwerty1234, or Letmein (etc) or something guessable, are you sharing passwords over websites?

When the Ashley Maddison site was hacked a couple of years ago, many of the user IDs and passwords were decrypted. I had to change details over several sites as a result of that. Thankfully was never actually attacked.

Simple remedy would be to change your password on AW if you haven't done that already.

Offline SI-Marker

Update from my side. Transpires I foolishly allowed a wg to log onto her profile whilst booked with me on an overnight outcall. It didn't occur to me that all the login stuff and IP's details linked, so AW see that as me possibly running multiple profiles.

Obviously (to me at least!) I don't, but this wg is part of a large group on AW which makes her login on my laptop worse by all accounts. I have two choices, delete my current aw profile and start afresh (it's almost 12 years old now and has lots of positive feedback from some well known established ladies, so I'd rather not throw all that away) or sit out the 3-6 months quoted for the 'aliases' to disappear. I have nothing to hide so if any ladies question it when I contact them, I will let them know. If they don't like it then so be it.... I think.

Anyway, password was changed the minute I found out, so is my username on there and also all my contact details. I doubt the last lot will help, but you never know.
