I thought this might make a useful thread as others can add suggestions. Or not.

Yes, using your actual everyday phone is a risk, but for some of us a second phone is itself dangerous as it would be hard to explain if found. eSIMs are on the horizon but not yet available (as of October 2018) - when available, you’ll be able to have two numbers on one iPhone, which may or may not be useful for punting security. (Dual-SIM Android phones are available.)

Prevent text messages showing previews on the lock screen: Settings, Notifications, scroll down to Messages, Show Previews, Never. You can do the same for WhatsApp etc. Obviously you have already given any escort contact an innocent name like IT Helpdesk or PPI Marketing or something, and you delete them when you don’t need them any more. (I set the ‘Company’ field for escorts to the Peach emoji, but maybe that’s risky.)

If you have a Mac, the desktop Messages app will show all your text conversations with no way to hide the sender panel, which of course is a great feature until it isn’t. On iPhone, go to Settings, Messages, Text Message Forwarding, uncheck. (I really wish you could do this per contact or group.)

Download a separate browser app for AW etc, and put it in a separate group (‘Web’ or some such) off the home page, and preferably on the second page of the group. I’ve found Ghostery pretty good but there are loads of others. Then, go to Settings, ‘Siri & Search’, scroll down to the settings for the app and uncheck ‘Search, Suggestions & Shortcuts’. This will avoid some External Link/Members Only moments where your AW username pops up in a text message to your wife. I know Safari’s Private mode does all of this, but a separate app is harder to get mixed up and just feels safer.

Make sure you at least minimise the app before closing the phone, to avoid hilarity when paying for a coffee.

Facebook: yes it’s an evil data harvesting doomsday machine, but it’s also nice for sharing your cat photos so there’s that. Anyway, from the iPhone app go to settings (bottom right of home page as of October 2018), Settings & Privacy, Personal Information, Upload Contacts, uncheck that. (Otherwise you can get interesting insights into the social media profiles of WGs who use their own phones, and it’s a bugger to delete an auto-uploaded contact from Messenger.) Also hide your contact details: Facebook app, Settings, Privacy settings, Manage your profile, Contact info, set to ‘Only me’ or whatever you feel comfortable with that isn’t sharing it with the whole world.

Watch out when copying any URL, as the next time you open any any web-related app it will spot it in the clipboard and offer to post it publicly (Facebook, Twitter), or do whatever else the app does. For this reason when looking for a profile on UKP it’s safer to copy just the number (and AW URLs appear in a couple of different formats so the number is more reliable anyway).

(Settings sometimes move around with iOS/app updates so some of the above may need a bit of interpretation in the future.)

Best security for iPhone is not to have one.
Apart from that just like anything keep checking your settings especially after doing any updates / new app installs just in case, like with some parts of windows, they are changed by the software.

Absolutely, but you kind of have to have a smartphone of some description these days, and they are on the whole extremely useful devices.

Most of the above also applies to Android, e.g. External Link/Members Only but I thought it would be useful not to mix them up in one thread.

Helpful info, thanks for taking the time

I find the guided access feature useful the occasional time someone wants to see a pic on my phone - prevents some joker checking your browsing history etc while the phone is out of your hands

That is awesome, I didn't know about that. Enable in Settings, Accessibility, Guided Access (or just search for it), then just triple-click the home button within the app you want to lock e.g. TV volume control. Love it.

Yeah, as you say, once you’ve set it up, enabling it any time just involves 3 quick presses of the home button. Discreet and easy

Nice idea OP

Kind of goes without saying that its worth paying attention to the privacy settings. Especially location services where you can stop your location being tracked. There was a thread a while agi about how iphone logs all the places you have been and you really need to make sure this is off. Quite scary when I checked mine and had a lot of very familiar locations. I immediately turned mine off  but cant remember how to do it now so if anyone else can it would be useful to publish here

Search function works:

But Apple have buried it deep in the system software. To find it and turn it off go to:
Settings - Privacy - Location Services -Scroll right down to the bottom of the long list to
System Services - bottom item again - Frequent Locations.

Either go into this and turn it off to prevent it recording future locations, or after punting remember to scroll to the bottom of the 'History' list and press 'clear history'.

This appears to be turned on by default - so if you have just upgraded to iOS 7 or have got a new iPhone with it on then I recommend sorting it ASAP - unless of course you're not married and don't care. Or of course you use a cheap punting phone and leave the iPhone behind.
Seems to have moved to significant locations now

I do have a smart phone nor do I see the need for one, don't want to watch anything on a small screen and hate touch sensitive screens, give me buttons every time

Probably for the best

You fucked up this post mashing the big keys on your computer

I'm less bothered about Significant Locations personally, since they are private to the phone and not displayed anywhere. Now you mention it though, I'm not keen on Google Maps marking Bamboo Spa in bigger letters than anything else for miles around, and I live in fear of my OH finding out you can share your location :scare:

These days it is hard to justify second phone to wife so I use application like Cloud SIM. Gives you virtual number on monthly subscription (so easy to dispose off the number and get new one). Also, text messages received on virtual number are only available inside the app. Calls made from within the app using virtual number do appear now on iPhone call history so you have to clean it up.

Lastly, make sure to turn off the notifications from Cloud SIM (I also actually delete the app itself - easy to reinstall from App Store and restore purchases).

Of course this means that you cannot have WhatsApp using that number - but honestly I think that's a positive

I wouldn't go too far with your phone security, as that is suspicious in itself. My OH knows my pin code and if she was inclined, she could look at what she wanted to. The only thing I'd pay attention to is location tracking. Also I leave my phone in the car for most punts and try to park in a public car park, not outside the girls front door.

If my ancient punting phone is ever found it has no pin and is hard reset after every use.
