I think the stuff that appeals to most punters here has been said by others better than I have. Here’s something for those that like to live “closer to the edge...”

From the main square, cross the bridge to the more residential quarter. There’s some nice restaurants up the side streets that aren’t such a rip off as the main tourist area. Follow the main road about 100 yards or more (from memory, can’t say I measured it). There’s a turning off to the right that shouts shitville and your nose may pick up the scent of lowlife p4p (hard to define, but firstly an area looks a bit shitty and the main people are shady-looking men who avoid eye contact  ).

Not very far along, on the left, is a gated area with 2 or 3 bouncer types who try to extract ‘entrance money’. You have to bluster hard to get past them without paying, in which case they hassle even harder when you come out (don’t engage in conversation and walk fast).

The inside is weird. A sort of open yard sectioned off around the edge with open covered partitions about the size of garage. Each p4p has her own ramshackle plot from which they try to entice business.

Now here’s the thing. If you are seriously planning to go, perhaps in the evenings (offerings, look and probably are, worse during the slack hours of the day), you might want to check out the vibe during the day just to have a look, and try to make friends with the bouncers so they don’t give you the skim-a-newbie routine in the evening.

Be aware, don’t carry too much cash or any valuables, and have the cheerful, friendly but very firm and swift exit in your mind for getting out.

(This is a sort of general rule. Applies in other trash places like Sonagachi, India, if you go down the interesting back alleys and certain places in South America too.) Most scammers trying to hit on you for money just to see the p4p are chancers trying to extract door fee on top of what you pay for the girl. They try to get you in conversation to manoevre your getaway. Sometimes there is indeed a door fee, in which case locals tell you the going rate. Mostly there isn’t, and it’s possible to take control of the situation just by walking quickly as if you know the score, dismissing objections with a friendly no. In Istanbul though it’s probably simpler to give them something, a nominal amount.

Like I said, a bit wild for most people, but at least you see what you’re getting and for a quickie it’s cheap. Enjoy, and stay safe.

My experience in Istanbul is pretty much resumed in my first post. I avoided any clubs / bars and got a few numbers on snapchat and tinder. Thanks for the advice.  Age and location means I do not punt these days much.  Google is OK but sentence structure of Turkish means that it is often translated as gobbledegook from Turkish and likewise from English where we have many words that say the same thing.  I spent 3 years working in Turkey and even with some command of the language find it difficult. 

Hopefully next year when restrictions lift I will be able to travel through there and provide more information.

It’s a good enough intro for a total beginner but bear in mind the reporter was playing the part of a gullible tourist and it only treated Taksim Sq area which even a blind person should know is a tourist trap. Looking at a map openly is like having mug tattooed on your forehead and stopping to look at your phone is almost as bad as it makes you a stationary target. Also you shouldn’t give out personal info of course. It may seem innocuous but a scammer will radio it to a colleague to spontaneously have ‘something in common’.

I suppose I’m lucky. I keep an expression handy that freezes off most of these cunts and body language that stops most of them approaching me anyway. The scam roads and markets are picturesque at night and I don’t avoid going there just — I mostly just seem to have a knack of avoiding that which is to be avoided.

I prefer the east side for relaxation. There’s many nice people, nice relaxed bars and restaurants and mostly feels more ‘normal’. Also, the museums are the best reason to visit Istanbul (avoid the mosques) and when you’ve done them, walk across the bridge, you don’t need a taxi — the view is great — and you definitely don’t need a fucking boat. I was threatened once (an East-side p4p place) but I was ready for their crap and acted very swiftly to secure a fast exit before they could extract cash or surround me.

You will find them hanging outside Tamsin square. This is the end of istiklal street where there is a taxi rank and a smallish area with benches.

Those who have been there know what it’s about.

You will find these tourist traps all over.

Another thing to note is that the clubs (proper clubs) are mainly for couples. You can’t really pick up girls as they are already with someone on entry. If you want to get in as a make on it’s own you book in advance and need to buy a table which is a bottle and drinks which will set you back around 100-200eu minimum

Hotels in this city require a passport for guests.

Istanbul should be such a beautiful exotic city and still could be if it wasn’t for the fucked up attitude of Erdogan, the number of con-men, trafficking, bad attitudes and basic lack of values.

The only place I found with workers open was a side-street on the Asia side with a very unappetising collection and bouncers trying to extort cash. I had a browse and it seems that attempts to shut down honest brothels has pushed things onto the Internet — something that is never my first choice.

It must be hard to do a wiki when the best options are social apps as there’s not much that’s consistent other than general availability and average prices. GF hotels are useful. I tried booking booking.com one time and there were stark notices in the stairway not to bring prostitutes and a second person. There’s apparently a large number of working girls in the city so maybe things will get better if Erdogan goes.

The only one I tried was the first one, arcade hotel which was close to taksim. The others were all a long way to travel.
I did go to an Ethiopian one in taksim but the girl didn't look great so I walked. I mainly stuck to the girls on the forum. I know how difficult it is there
