No-one seems to have mentioned but it’s surely worth noting (the capital, Quito) has more than adequate punting. It’s only a short hop from Colombia (plane or even bus) and relatively safe and unspoilt. Brothels change location every so often. My favourite, less than five minutes walk from the main tourist square, was disguised as a sort of garage yard. Knock discreetly and the bouncer opens it an inch, just walked in like I was a regular, which I soon was, and slipped him a small note for my cheek. Through the yard and the main building. Common enough setup (similar to cheapo cities in north of Brazil), semi-lit bar like a disco, cheap beer, cheap fanny, and the prossies all seemed like local ‘village girls’ that had never travelled to the big bad world. Which more or less describes Ecuador — except for Galapagos, which is big bucks. Nice hippy hotel that warns which streets are safest after dark. All in all quite cute and well worth a couple of weeks.
