Bit of a practical question.

For punters in a relationship and with a joint bank account, getting out £100 here and there for day to day spending was easy enough until the rise of contactless payments, which have almost removed the need for cash.

What excuses are people using to make withdrawals?

Going to the pub with mates.  Just take out more than needed for a few pints.

It is possible to cancel the contactless on your debit card. Call them and kick a fuss, they will send you replacement card which will not work for contactless. Banks are not keen in making this info public, for obvious reasons.

As for me, I don't use the joint acocunt for most of my punting, but it is still possible to request cash back at supermarket checkouts, etc so you could still get money out this way, witohut anything obvious showing on your bank statement (Cash backs are usually included within your supermarket spend and do not even shown as an ATM Withdrawal). The only thing that could give you away is the actual supermarket receipt, which shows the cah back as a separate line, and some of the stores will get you to initial that lin, to prove that you have received the cash back and signed for it.

Stay in the habit of paying cash when ever you can. Just say it’s easier to manage your budget that way.
Get separate accounts - definitely easier to manage your budget.
Get a job where there are list of expenses.
Pay the whole bill by card when you go out with friends and have them pay their part of the bill to you  in cash.

If its pure cash put it in a second wallet till use. If it could get found then have a second bank account, drip feed in the account till ready for use

Either last week or the week before, most of the Visa payment system went down. People we getting to supermarket checkouts and petrol station tills and suddenly finding that their cards didn't work. Just say it's always a good idea to have cash in case things go wrong and that sometimes you use the cash to fill the car and then have to replace it.

For me - the excuse is the occasional casino visit for a poker tournament.
