Yes, the traffickers are indeed scum. However, there is another significance here in that that the Harriet Harmans and abolitionists of this world are dressing up their feminist opposition to prostitution as a way of tackling human trafficking.
To sell their argument, abolitionists misrepresent the whole escorting industry as based on trafficking and exploitation.
Now, while it is known that pimping and trafficking does go on, I personally have never come across it. Ever. Any escorts I have ever met were independent operators and generally pretty shrewd. A surprising number were students, in it for the short term. Some were professional ladies with day jobs wanting to make extra cash. Who doesn't? But then I've always taken care over the kind of escort I choose.
The answer to tackling trafficking is not to abolish prostitution, an impossible task in any case(think of abolition of booze in America in the thirties), but for the police and courts to go after the criminal gangs of EE pimps with vigour. Most people brought into the U.K. for exploitation are here to pick fruit or cockles, not to sell sexual services. Note that Harriet Harman and her cronies have not called for the abolition of fruit. I wonder why
