Offline Daffodil

I thought I’d put together some information regarding my thoughts on scams. It is mainly aimed at new punters, but perhaps more seasoned members might find something useful.

I have no doubt that I’ve missed plenty so I’d like to encourage others to post their thoughts too.

And it’s not meant to be scare-mongering. Serious scams are thankfully few and far between and the maximum most of us stand to lose is a couple of quid on a private gallery scam.

I think it’s also fair to say that most prossies are not out there to intentionally scam us, even though we might feel like that when we encounter the far more common “poor service”.

Offline Daffodil

Types of scam

Probably the most straightforward scam is the private gallery scam. Private galleries usually cost £1-2 and genuine prossies will have additional content for you to view. Sometimes they will only show a face picture here (for their added anonymity, supposedly). It’s a little revenue stream for them, and for AW of course. Private gallery scams are set up by people who have no interest in offering the service you’re after, but will pretend they do and hope that you will pay to view the private gallery.

Bait and switch is common. Profiles will use a picture of somebody else to bait the punter and then, when you arrive, you will meet somebody else. They bank on you “thinking with your dick” or being too polite to walk and continuing with the punt. A variation involves the pictures being of the girl you’re meeting, but in her prime (younger and/or slimmer etc.).

Similarly to bait and switch, some profiles will lure you with services that are not actually offered or will cost you (undisclosed) extras. Confirming on the phone beforehand and again before handing over the cash is always sensible.

Some profiles will ask for a deposit to “deter timewasters”. Some of these profiles are simply run by deluded prossies, but most will be a scam. You hand over your hard earned and then never hear from the prossie again. Money should only ever be handed over at the time of the punt.

Some girls will prey on men’s emotional weakness and ask for money up front/for future services/etc. Often it’s a genuine prossie, maybe even one who has been punted by the victim in the past. Bad idea. Pay prossies on the day for services to be carried out on that day. Even when the girl is not intending to scam, prossies are so unreliable that you should never expect to see your money (or service you’ve paid for) again.

Blackmail is fortunately very rare and I do not believe I have ever heard of a case. It’s possible though and we hear all the time about punters being indiscreet with their personal details. I am sure it happens. Try not to give any personal information to a prossie. Even if you think you couldn’t care less if they told the world, things change. Your circumstances change.

Muggings are again very rare, but probably concern the newbie punter more than any other type of scam. The worry is that you are lured to a property, made to feel intimidated, and have your money taken. The scammer will presume you won’t go to the police as you’re embarrassed about being a punter and won’t want family/friends to find out.

Offline Daffodil

Who scams

Anybody. I think it’s commonly forgotten that even a genuine girl with genuine pictures could just be operating a private gallery scam. Private gallery scams can earn a lot of money. It isn’t just guys sitting in their bedrooms, lifting pictures and making fake profiles. Don’t presume that because the girl has a verification picture/is willing to chat on skype/will talk on the phone/etc. that the profile is definitely genuine. Essentially, until the girl in the picture is actually sucking your cock at the agreed price you cannot be sure (even then the blackmail email might ping through later that evening :scare: ). Genuine punters can also scam and will know a lot of the tricks from using AW themselves. A genuine punter may create a profile and then leave it feedback from himself, thus making it look genuine.

Offline Daffodil

Scam profiles

They range from the fucking amateurish (and that can be said about plenty of genuine profiles) to the very plausible. Imagine if you are a girl who wants to scam. You use your own pictures, get verified, can chat on the phone or on skype, and operate a very lucrative private gallery scam.

Feedback? Feedback is for sale (there are plenty of people on AdultWork who offer positive feedback for positive feedback in return). Scammers can also create numerous accounts and leave themselves genuine looking feedback.

Also, don’t forget, that entire profiles can be sold. A genuine prossie, when retiring, can pass on her fully verified profile to anybody, with loads of positive feedback and even positive reviews on here.

Similarly, when a prossie retires, she may still leave her profile up and rake in the private gallery income.

The point is that scam profiles come in all shapes and sizes, with some being almost impossible to spot.

How to avoid being scammed

It’s not possible to reduce your risk to zero, but then punting in general is not risk free. There are all sorts of potential pitfalls than can befall you and, to be honest, losing a couple of quid to a private gallery scam is one of the least significant. However, the following will help to reduce your risk, but is not exhaustive.

Do a reverse image search of pictures on a prossie’s profile. Any positive hits suggest cause for concern, but not always. If they get hits from an Eastern European agency site, she may still be genuine. If they get hits from a social media site or similar, she may still be genuine (but you should probably let the girl know know that the prossie profile can be linked to her real life persona). If you get hits from Playboy, then you should be moving on.

Beware profiles that only use images from webcams. Screen shots from webcams are virtually impossible to reverse image search.

Check to see where the profile is accessed from. This appears at the bottom of the profile. Sometimes the pimp will be managing the profile from “back home”, but it is a red flag if the girl claims to be in Kent, but the profile is being accessed from Bulgaria.

A displayed mobile number is a good sign. If one isn’t displayed then it should be readily forthcoming in email. If they seem hesitant to provide one or, once provided, to talk to you on the phone then be concerned.

Never give out any personal details. Use a fake name, use a punting phone, use a punting email. Try not to let her see your car. Do not reveal what you do for a living. Do not tell her where you live. Don’t carry personal identifiers, you may accidentally reveal them/leave them behind.

Reference a profile against those discussed on UKPunting. It is not foolproof (scammers can join here and post fake reviews/information, but they’re often weeded out), but a review by a long-standing member is as good a recommendation as you are likely to get.

Never pay a deposit or cash up front. The way the prossie/scammer may ask for a deposit is subject to change. Some will request you pay for the private gallery, some will ask that you pay for a webcam session. Avoid.

Confirm services over the phone and again when you meet the girl in person, before handing over the money. Be prepared to walk if you detect hesitancy.

Request a face picture before a meet. It is much harder to bait and switch when you’ve seen a face. Some genuine girls will still refuse (anonymity being the reason, even though that doesn’t really wash with an emailed face picture), but if one is provided then it helps.

Beware girls advertising as escorts, but with only webcam ratings. They have ticked the escorting box to come up in more searches.

Beware profiles who have ticked every like box. How many girls do you think have sybian sex machines or are willing to let you shit in their mouths? They are merely trying to appear in as many search results as possible. At the very least these profiles will switch services on you.

Hidden feedback is invariably an indication that the profile is to be avoided at all costs. Hover your mouse pointer over the number to get a break down of the feedback even if it is hidden (number of positives, negatives, and neutrals). Remember that “feedback only” is not displayed even with a hover and is the usual means by which a punter can leave a warning. Hidden feedback with a breakdown of purely positive reviews may still contain plenty of “feedback only”.

Read the feedback. Sometimes you see things like “thanks Jessica” when the profile is for a girl named Katie. Prossies do use fake names and may change them from time to time, but this may suggest the profile has changed hands.

Beware feedback from lots of “punters” who only have one feedback themselves, often only  from the girl you’re looking at. It’s often worth cross-referencing the feedback of the guys leaving the feedback. See if they have feedback from/for girls you have seen/know are genuine.

Only take the agreed money (maybe an extra £20 or so to pay for extras if you’re happy to do this) and your cheap punting phone. If the worst happens and you’re mugged then you lose the bare minimum. Don’t carry your ID/personal identifiers.

If you’re struggling to contact a girl (by phone/email/whatever) just walk away. If they’re genuine it shouldn’t be hard to get in touch.

Don’t confuse an automated reply with a genuine reply. Automated replies come immediately after you’ve sent a message so check the timings of your outgoing mail and their incoming mail. Also if you receive an email from the prossie on AW, check to see if your email was open and read. If not then it is an automated reply. Not always (even often) part of a scam profile, but something to be aware of.

Yes, this is a problem, and I have been a victim of it (though she didn't actually ask me for the money, I knew she needed it, and offered her a loan payable in cash or bookings).  Dumb idea, even a previously reliable WG can't necessarily be trusted in this situation, and the excuses will begin.  As Vorian put it, "once they have your money, they don't give a fuck.  Literally".

The problem with these types of threads is they invariably become guide books for shifty people wanting to know how to con people.

But two more scams to add to Daffodils list.

070 number scam

These numbers look like innocent mobile numbers. But there are not, far from it. They are premium rate lines charging between 50p and £1.50 per minute with hefty connection charges too.

This means your mobile phone monthly minutes will not apply neither so you run the risk of being found out due to raking up sidelined bills.

Some girls on their websites have these numbers, as do Adultwork knock offs (e.g Vivastreet)

WebCammer Scam

This is the girl who does not escort at all. She is simply a cammer who knows nobody will view her cams unless she pretends she escorts too and thus she ticks the escort box in AW and even puts prices and hours down too.

Many will try the trick saying "I wont see anyone for an escort booking till I have spoken to them via a cam booking first". Meaning she will use a shed load of credits for a cam booking and then still not see you for a regular booking.

All excellent advice.
A quick question on reverse image searches, I can't seem to be able to copy the image as it comes up with a box regarding copyright. Do you use something like zap grab or is there a more elegant way?

Excellent post Daff and exhaustive too.

As has been discussed many times before on UKP, remember that AW feedback is rubbish, believe very little of it and realise that any negative or neutral comments are worth far more than all the glowing positives. Ideally UKP is the place to look.

Reverse image searches are a necessity and when a fake is found report it to AW and on the Scammers thread here.

Try to keep an eye on your punting area, even when not planning a punt. A quick search will show who is moving in and out of the area and you'll get used to the profile pictures. If interested hot list them and make a note of their current profile name as pictures are reused on different profiles or profile names are changed quite often. This won't apply to all areas but my area is dominated by fake profiles and touring prossies, bloody hard to separate them at times without up to date info.

Finally, always think with your head. If a profile looks too good then it probably is - this is easier to do when not feeling horny and trying to arrange a punt.

Excellent thread and a good one to refer newbies to, along with the educational AW guide.

Also, Google the mobile number. Although SIM cards are cheap to get, some scammers get lazy and end up using same numbers. If previous profile AND the mobile number were listed in the scam thread, googling will show UKP link for the mobile number mentioned.

Another I've heard of - twice 2 diff gents diff girls - you hand over the money and she says she has to give it to the 'driver' and off she goes to the car, jumps in and he drives off. One of the gents went after her and the driver pulled a knife on him. He sensibly backed off and left it at that.
I'm always amazed too how many gents go to shower leaving their wallet, bags etc with me. Not that I'd ever dream of touching them but I'm sure some would.  the majority of people are nice but there's that odd one waiting to take advantage

I have mentioned this as well, including a punting friend of mine, who had his card taken (and some cash) and he only spotted this later on, well after the punt.

Yes, well worth noting that one.
I usually have a pre-punt-piss but always keep my jacket on now, I didn't the first couple of times till I realised it was a risk.
I tend to hide my wallet and "real" phone in the car somewhere, just take punting phone, punt fee in one pocket and an extra 20 in another pocket for extras if required. I left my punting phone in the car one day but couldn't find the fucking flat and had to go back, turn it on and ring the WG again! Doh
