Author Topic: Google Bookmarks - keeping private bookmarks away from shared PCs  (Read 733 times)

Sorry if this is obvious and old-hat but although this service has existed for many years I wasn't aware of it (or had forgotten about it) until recently. I am passing it on as it may help others looking to protect their privacy.

Until recently I had a very small number of discreetly named punting related bookmarks buried deep within my Google Chrome bookmarks, but my other half was now going to be making more use of the shared PC for a while since she needed software that was only installed on there. My main concern was that when you type a URL in the Chrome web browser, even by typing just one letter it uses your saved bookmarks to autocomplete. As long as you browsed previously in Incognito mode it won't use your private search history, but it will use any bookmarks on the default Chrome browser account.

So I looked around for a way to save bookmarks outside of the browser and this fits the bill.

If you use Gmail for your punting mail then opening an Incognito tab and logging into Gmail logs you into "Google" for that Gmail account. Otherwise you need to log into Google using your punting email address. That will mean that Google is tracking your browsing of course (in theory you can amend settings to avoid that) but if you were logged into Gmail it would have been doing the same anyway.

Now you can go to External Link/Members Only and you can save any bookmarks there.

You would just need that one "safe" bookmark in your browser bookmarks - to External Link/Members Only - to get all your saved bookmarks without any local PC storage or autocomplete risk. There are user defined categories available to manage the list.

You can add bookmarks manually, of course, but you can also add a toolbar button that will add the currently open page to your Google Bookmarks list. At the bottom of the Google Bookmarks you'll see: "Bookmark pages more easily. Drag this bookmarklet to the Bookmarks bar of your browser:".

Closing Incognito windows then logs out of everything without a trace.

It's the same with an iphone / mac if you use safari they get pushed up to iCloud.

I have different google accounts for different things. Even my fish tank and alarm system have their own google account!

The special account is only on my phone, has no notification sound and requires a password to view it. If I want to use that account on another device, it is always done incognito and deleted afterwards.

That's probably good advice but my approach is to just not let anyone near my PC or tablet.... Gordon doesn't share.

As per Gomez42.  you could set up a new gmail account and use that ID to log into Chrome. Create a load of innocuous browsing history that you don’t mind your other half seeing. Then, if you must use the shared pc for punting, log in using your other original gmail ID. The histories should remain separate.

Indeed, use a punting profile for this and I never save the profile on any device, only Incognito mode. My issue was with saving any useful links in an easily usable way yet completely online.

Seems quite elaborate. I don't have any Adult related bookmarks, relying upon memory. I use Opera in private mode with VPN for punting access. I use Firefox in private mode for watching or downloading porn - because VPN is slow for porn, and I don't want to be toggling the VPN on and off in Opera.

I use Google mail for some punting, but don't use Chrome for anything adult, or a Google account for anything, because I don't believe Google isn't smart enough to join up the dots, even accidentally.

It's not as difficult as perhaps I made it sound. I don't save the obvious sites, but there have been some obscure ones that I like to keep links to.

If using chrome you can simply use another profile to save bookmarks etc and they will get synced up to your google account, it's managed from the "people" menu.

I would be cautious about doing that though as it would be easy to forget to logout I guess. Personally I think using an encrypted file to save bookmarks etc would work a lot better if privacy is a concern.

I would definitely avoid this! Not only do you have to logout, you also have to then go into the Manage People window and delete the profile from there every time you logout - otherwise the profile name stays there in the list for selection!! The point is only to use Incognito mode with all data online, no trace on the PC.

I save my punting bookmarks, pics etc on a usb stick and run the browser also from the stick. That way no evidence left on the shared pc. The usb is password protected and given a generic name like "work reports 2016"

If you have a shared PC, just setup separate logins for each user. Unless they're an admin they can never access your files or history.
