Author Topic: Hotel Wifi and accessing UKP  (Read 1389 times)

I've noticed that it is getting harder to access UKP when using hotel wifi. In many cases, the wifi ISP either blocks access or the ISP is blocked by UKP.

Its totally understandable why UKP may block the ISP, as I'd guess that trolls will have been causing problems, but it's irritating when you want to check a potential booking out and you can't access UKP to check reviews.
As for ISP blocking access, well they should leave that decision to the user.

I know I should be better prepared for some trips and a potential booking, but I don't always have time.

Anyone else having problems accessing UKP whilst travelling?

It's something you need to take up with whoever supplies hotel wifi. Oldadmin blocked access from certain ISP's for a reason and I can't see that changing.

Hotels , other locations and public ISPs block certain sites (and TV channels) so that they can't be blamed for kids accessing adult content or people accessing them in public areas. As an example Travelodge were in the papers several years ago after some young girls accessed the adult channels on Freeview - shortly afterwards they were removed from many of their TVs and probably changed their ISP settings as well.

Can you not download a free VPN app for your phone/tablet. I use one to watch UK tv when abroad. Noting DavieMacs comment that you can’t access UKP if using a VPN (I think!).

I always hotspot my laptop from my phone or use my iPad when travelling, 4G is 100x faster than hotel wifi and as long as you're unlocked for 18 rated content with your phone service provider, you'll be ok. Yes, it's annoying UKP block VPNs, but as you said it's for good reason.

Well, I would have replied last night, but hey - I was in a Hotel!

I'm just having a moan really, not at UKP but at the hotels ISP's, plus the trolls who've caused other places to be added to the block list.

I'm not a software expert, but it'd be great if we were able to use VPN with an access key to UKP, provided by the site. That way it can be accessed and it would be known who is connecting via VPN, allowing traceability in that instance.

Just an idle musing, and probably a right ball-ache to administer.

With data so cheap these days what's the issue? Get a cheap PAYG or monthly sim for your punting phone and never worry about wifi again. Hot spot it to your pc if you need to. Plus you can do all your navigation to punts on it too, so no dodgy history on your main handset to worry about.

Sometimes it strange, why block UKP, is it because of the adult content, but in the same hotel chain, the adult movies are hard core porn, and freely available for anyone over 18

Not sure it is the hotel blocking UKP but maybe the other way round. UKP may be blocking the hotels' ISP

I use a PAYG, but use cash for tops up - I'd have to use a traceable debit or credit card to "turn on" access to adult sites, and thats not happening.

If you know a way around this, I'd be interested to hear it :)

I've had both - if it's UKP blocking then I get the "Due to trolls.." message, but some hotel ISP prevent access, giving an "unable to connect" page. Other "normal" sites connect fine.

I just link my phone to my laptop or access using my mobile,  can rarely be arsed to connect to wifi as generally find the data usage i get on the mobile each month is more than adequate to mess about with logging into wi fi

Wifi in hotels is usually terrible, there's all manner of ways of getting connected that avoids suffering the tiny bandwidth hotels offer. Even the worst mobile tariff offers loads of data, particularly if its your punting phone which is turned off when not in use and not using any for the majority of the time, an hour in a hotel room isn't going to make much impact.

not exactly the same but vpn apps like tunnel bear or Nord will help you get round your mobile providers data protection for what ever reason you don't want to change it due to kids in the house or the Mrs finding out something.

Yes but Admin/Head may have restrictions on allowing access thru VPNs. It makes it a fuck site harder work to see if it’s a troll trying to get in.
