Google Knows more about you than you think: External Link/Members Only

I think if you're with a spouse that has knowledge of internet secruity and computer science. I believe It would be very hard for a punter to hide your tracks on the internet and your punting adventures.

Shouldn't be a problem if you use a punting phone, email address and google account.  Your OH would have to know about these in order to check on you.     :hi:

You can also log out of your Google account and use a private browser.

First thing is obviously to not have the same or guessable password on any secondary accounts. As a second layer of protection you can enable 2 factor authentication. There's a handy app for smartphones that gives you the code you need (i.e. For anyone to sign into your account they need your username, password, phone with the code generator on it and need to know the passcode for your phone). However if it's been discovered that you have some secondary account then Detective Suspicious will already be onto you

If you read Googles terms, conditions & privacy statement - thoroughly - you might think again about using it as your default browser.

Google & social media sites like Facebook  :vomit:  are purely designed to acquire & accumulate as much data, personal & professional, as "legally" possible.

Unfortunately Google's reverse image search is superb so I use that on an old contract phone - unless anyone has other recommendations?

I only  use Google as browser to watch football, I use Opera for here and Firefox  for normal browsing. I have one 'normal' Gmail account and one totally unrelated 'punting' Gmail account.

I use Bing as a search engine for anything punting related as Google shows up searches on any device on your network and can be seen by anyone.      :hi:

Are you sure? I thought it would only show up on other devices if you are logged in with the same google account.

Have you tried turning it all off ??  :unknown: :unknown:

Here are my thoughts to try and maintain privacy:

Use Firefox as your punting browser, and in the Preferences section select never remember history.
I would choose Android over iPhone for a punting phone as you have more control, and can also use Firefox as your browser, again in permanent private mode. Turn location off in settings, it will then be unavailable to all apps. If you need to find your location then turn it on long enough to fix where you are then turn it off again.
Assuming you are using punting email and other accounts in your nom de plume(s) make sure that these are not remembered, turn off the intelligent predictive function which remembers words you type frequently
Anyone being nosy needs two pieces of information, your user name and password, keep them both secret from those around you, and make sure there is nothing to link your punting user names with your real id. If the person being nosy isn't even aware that you have an account at a particular website then they are not going to be prompted to try and look further, and even if they suspect they haven't got anything to start on.
Delete texts and emails as soon as they have served their purpose. If you want create a 'little-dark-colured-book' (Autocensor wouldn't allow me to mention the colour)use one of the free cloud accounts, and access the document directly, don't download it.
Consider using one of the Linux distro's as your punting environment. Ubuntu now loads gracefully next to Windows and you end up with a dual boot system. It doesn't require a lot of specialist knowledge to get a basic system working. (OK this one may not be for everybody, but Linux is a lot more user friendly these days)
Use web access for email (Through a private browser)
These precautions wont keep a determined hacker or state sponsored investigator out but they will help ensure that your private life remains private from those around you.

It happened once, I'd searched for something punting related on my desktop and the search showed up on my phone's google search history so I checked my son's laptop and it was there as well. (All on the same network) I haven't checked again since as I stopped using google as a search engine.

Your son must be using the same account as you then (Google, Apple etc etc). Just because two devices are on the same network doesn't mean they will share browser activity.

Could be that, he does use some my (non punting) email addresses, including Gmail, sometimes to set up different accounts for games he plays when he gets a short term ban or to get a months free trial of some site.

Just seemed a bit of a coincidence it only happened in the search history of Google without being logged in.   :unknown:

A good link. Complete with ironic message from Google:
"Only you can see this data"  :sarcastic:

I remember when Google wasn't quite so big they were keen on privacy and protecting the customer. That soon got fucked up!

Lots of food for thought ideas there. Not sure why I'd want Linux and Windows on a Mac but maybe that was a slip.

As I've said before, it all comes down to who you want to protect what information from and the downside if they find out. Every security measure usually comes with a loss of functionality (Firefox is the best browser for a Mac but on an iPhone has less integrated capacity. Turning off location services is great until you can't find the prossie' address or the direction out of a tube station.) I'd say if your ball-n-chain wants to use a computer, buy her one -- with whatever o/s yours doesn't have. Use yours for work as well and it is a good reason. Let her live her life. Separately.

She'd prefer that, so you can't track her when she's out banging that waiter she met last week, or getting split in two by a BBC at her local Travelodge

I havn't any experience of Macbook, so cant offer any thoughts on it, but on Windows, particularly the 'home editions' are more difficult to secure. Also easier to install things like key loggers on Windows.

Once someone is suspicious it gets a lot harder to keep them out, much easier to not to give them the the cause to be suspicious in the first place.

My ex never uncovered my punting habits, although she did think I was having an affair once I stopped nagging her for sex and I know she trawled the computer for evidence because I set her up. You cant win, they dont want to give you sex, or it comes at too higher price, but they dont want you to go elsewhere... but thats another thread
