From the NHS website:
You can get genital herpes:
- from skin-to-skin contact with the infected area (including vaginal, anal and oral sex)
when there are no visible sores or blisters
- if a cold sore touches your genitals
- by transferring the infection on fingers from someone else to your genitals
- by sharing sex toys with someone who has herpes
I am comforted by Asiansurfer’s advice about giving oneself genital herpes, from your own oral herpes, thanks. However, there does seem to be still a risk of passing it to someone else via hands. So I’m going to respectfully say I think the comment that it can only be transmitted membrane to membrane isn’t backed up by other, informed sources.
If there is one thing we have learned from CV-19, it’s how much we touch our faces, and how far particles spread from this method. If I feel the tingle of a coldsore (I’ve had them most of my life I think, although not had a flare-up for many years now), it’s definitely no licky pokey sucky fuck until things are long gone.
