The following description of what happened today rang a bell with me, but I couldn't remember where I'd read it or what was said, so I hope someone can fill me in. (fnar fnar)

My other half received a text this morning that simply said "Hey this stevie xx" [sic] from 075106539**. Now I'm thinking it's someone/thing trying to get him to sign up to some adult site or another, so 1) what could it be, and 2) how does it work? I'm guessing he texts or calls back to ask who 'stevie' is and then...what? and 3) how did they get his number? Do AW sell details that are added into booking forms or service seeker profiles?

Anyone else had or heard of this?

Not sure but I would definitely not be ringing our texting that number, I'm not a techno wizz, are some numbers super expensive to contact (I know that 0898 n the like are)?

Oh yes I know, there's no way he's going to contact them, in case it activates something that sends him even more spam than he already gets! That's why I thought I'd ask here, I'm sure some guys have had similar, but my memory fails me :unknown:

If he replies it will probly sign him up to a repeating v. expensive service. People have been scammed for hundreds in one day. AW sometimes has numbers  for false profiles that are put up by these scammers.

I'd be tempted to text stevie just to tell him he's a cunt

My bet goes with a premium rate phone number, those scams get you curious enough to call back. Two things for sure if he calls back - one it won't be cheap and two, more crap will follow.

I had some random texts a while ago to sign up to an adult site. I ignored them until I found out I'd been charged £1.50 a time for receiving them.

Blimey if my OH saw I'd got a message like that the last thing she'd think would be that I've been targeted by a marketing scam of some sort. The first I'd know about it would be from her mother, sister or any one of the coven that she gossips with and spends all fucking day yacking at, be it by phone, facebook, text or what-the-fuck-ever. And it would be to tell me that I'm a dirty fucking pervert who doesn't deserve such a lovely partner. Oh my life! :dash:

I've received texts like that and others like "Here's that video I told you about! She's a right dirty slut!" with a link in the message (not obvious from the link text that it's a site, usually "vid 1" or something) that takes you to a porn site or charges £3 cos you've downloaded a video.

Problem is, they usually have the phone number from going on a porn site to start with (at least that's what EE told me when I tried to complain)

It's defo a scam.

Socks Now you have an excuse if the OH catches you with a WGs text. "Bloody hell, Mrs S it must be one of those advertising texts!"

Urgh! I'll pass that on to him, thanks. Any idea how to stop this? How can this happen, or be allowed to happen?

Ah, the difference is that I know Mr Cat uses Adultwork, and I have no qualms about him receiving geniune texts from norty ladies (although it's bad form if they're trying to drum up biz through unsolicited texts!), I was just concerned and intrigued about it being a scam or worse.

I don't think this is SAAFE so I am sure you can drop the full number in here!

It might help to do so as the number is meaningless with **'s!

As it's not a WG's number, and it's potentially a scam, I didn't want to post the whole number in one go. Just being cautious. The two ** should be 26.

Don't do anything, as soon as you try to contact them they'll know it's a live number and the floodgates will open with more crap. I'd ignore or block it.

If you google the number it leads to uk.book.info and a site that seems to hold people phone books. The number is apparently in 'Carpenter Allen's' phone book (under k)

Those phone book's are fake. The people aren't real or connected to the numbers.

Your 'other half', 'Mr Cat' is also your father?!  What is it with the female members of UKP this Christmas?

Back to topic.  After making bookings on AW and having to enter my number into the confirmation form, it has then been automatically transferred to my profile.  (Perhaps this also happens if number used for verification or other reasons?)  Now I always remember to clear it straight away.  I believe it was either used by the site themselves or because client connections was active - so a third party searching for numbers.  I then had unsolicited texts trying to instigate sexting or inviting me to watch porn.  I ignored all, but my bill later showed £1.50 charge per text.

I rang Vodafone and they revealed them to be 'adult subscription services' and after explaining that I hadn't ever signed up, had the charges refunded.  Also, at no cost to me, a premium text blocker applied to my number.  This means I can't enter competitions on telly by text too, but no loss there.

So best to ignore but check with billing company too.

I later Googled the numbers and some had been mentioned in forums for phone scams.

Ha! No, Mr Cat is most definitely not my father :sarcastic:

AHA! Thank you, this sounds most likely. He switched Client Connections on recently (to see what it does) so this is probably what's happened. I'll advise him to switch it off and clear his phone number from AW profile and check his bill.

Client Connections also meant I was receiving random AW mail/flirts from SPs touting for business or asking me to put up my photo or something.  Got too annoying - a bit too Facebooky for my liking.
