Dig a little deeper, and they'll probably establish that most of them are women.

Edit: having now read the article  :D, it really is a load of ballocks.

72,800 sex workers estimated - OK, around 70,000 would be an estimate, 72,800 is a false attempt to establish credibility through spurious accuracy.

"The reason many decide to sell sex is simple - money." No shit, Sherlock
" in the brothel she says she could make much more - earning up to £100 a night." Is this a report on the 1970s?

Some people clearly would prefer if she worked as a homeless beggar. Scottish police recently reported that street beggars are "earning" around £20 an hour and that given the facilities it is a "lifestyle choice".

The prossie short film was heartbreaking, quite well-made. Teela Sanders' research doesn't look that bad but her book is expensive and clearly supplementing her wages rather than going down the road of her students (she reckons 1 in 4 sex-workers have a degree,* use sex work to pay for studies etc etc.)

It reminds me of the abortion debate. Abolitionists didn't care about the human cost of their god-inspired 'principles', of the hundreds of women dying in backstreet abortions. It was a badly drafted law that was eventually enacted to save lives but the principle behind the law of minimising harm was pretty good. A shame they can't stand up for prostitutes in the same way.

*so is the recent Ken Loach film, I Daniel Blake, but these emotive depictions can also be used two ways by abolitionists.

This story was planted by the government.  So why?  They are having new legislation next summer - they are leaking their ideas.

I think this is good.  While the BBC has slanted it a bit, the original story was probably about hard working escorts that need protecting.  It could be they will make 2 girls working together legal.

As long as it is not the NI /scanda solution.
