In relation to Hugh's comments, I have a theory about Daniel.

Nat's English is poor.   Alice is good on a day to day basis, but she does not understand quite a number of words, or phrases.  However, when I visited Alice and subsequently Alice and Nat together I received a large number of emails both before and after the meeting written in good and fluent style.  Some of these communications contained words which, if subsequently repeated to Alice, she had obviously never heard used.
