I’m new to the UK punting scene (I live abroad)
How reliable are the reviews on Adultwork?
Is that the gold standard for finding great companions ?

AW is the bronze standard. A good first check but sometimes unreliable with pimps promoting their own. Checking the other feedback of the alleged punter is always useful.
This site is not the Gold Standard though. It is the Platinum one!

My advice would be to read the wiki

and if you want a companion, sign up to a dating site

There will be a lot of fake feedback on AW as has been said previously.

Some of it will be genuine though so don’t take it all as a bad sign.

You should peruse these hallowed boards for info and glean as much as you can.

Be prepared for abuse. It comes with the territory but an awful lot of good intel is here.

I learned to take W/G, feed back on A/W with a pinch of salt. A system that's to open to abuse and misuse IMO

Currently I have 0 feed back on my A/W account (and its going to stay that way of some time). That alone states how much faith I have, in that system.

all of them true
however there are a lot that are not
and if they have blocked any one from seeing their feed back
then dont chance it

There was a recent thread on here about the worst reviewed prossies on UKP (i.e. the ones with the most neg reviews)

A cursory glance at the AW feedback for those same prossies shows predominately positive reviews
