Author Topic: where have the subheading gone ?  (Read 695 times)

Offline jeanphillipe

sorry if i missed the announcement.

the last post by  now no longer shows which topic it was from in the subheading.

it not really necessary but was a cool little feature to see a summary of recent topics,

also to admin , out of curiosity. what impact in terms of numbers has the site had since off topic was removed ?

I hope the removal of the subheadings is temporary and just part of Admins "work in progress"

I wish Off Topic was re-introduced as I believe it added something to the forum but subject to the avoidance of petty squabbling ... perhaps any inappropriate comments should lead to a 14 day ban so that people think twice before shouting off

I agree, it also brought a sense of cohesion among members as guys from different areas would interact, it gave the forum a sense of community.  :music:

Still sounds like excessive effort for admin - I'm sure he has many better things to do than police the off topic section of a punting forum.

I agree, it also brought a sense of cohesion among members as guys from different areas would interact, it gave the forum a sense of community.  :music:

I'd be surprised if many of the arguments didn't have the opposite effect though. We also still have the national section which brings punters together.

I mentioned this about a week ago as I thought it was maybe an upgrade glitch?

Oddly there were more debates as opposed to arguments since some left last year  :hi:

im pretty sure admin is not bringing and has no plans to bring it back.  in the mobile version of the site there was a pretty stern message which mentioned off topic is never coming back.

i just wonder how popular it actually was, i know i frequented it. pretty much everyone one here is an arsehole and a nayerdogooder albeit with opposing views politically, in a weird way everyone sort of fit in.

but i can empathize with admin for a freeby he simply doesn't have time and some ppl were going OTT.

That was my quick and easy solution to hiding the Seeking.com thread from appearing. That thread might not show in the thread listings for those who don't have SA access but it still showed on the frontpage when it got bumped. It resulted in PMs from members asking for access and I've had enough of PMs on UKE+UKP.

also to admin , out of curiosity. what impact in terms of numbers has the site had since off topic was removed ?

So far this month the average is exactly 1,067 posts per day, last year April the average WITHOUT OT was 1,081. So barely any difference. Some who spent a lot of time in OT might find that hard to believe, but the vast majority of the 55,000+ accounts who have logged in past 30 days do not care about it.

Ahhh yes I see ... the two did coincide.

Off topic sections on specialist forums can be popular with some (myself included) but are notoriously problematic and confrontational (football, politics, religion especially) and the hassle of moderation, just isn't worth it ... especially if the moderation resides largely with one person on a very large forum.
It's a shame because they can be a useful source of help and information but the accompanying off topic discussion can drift well 'off topic' and become a extra battleground for rival factions.

I don't know the history of 'off topic' here, but suspect the membership was given one last chance within some updated criteria and didn't comply so patience ran out?

There's a rather large 'off topic' section on UKE, which is designed as more of a chat platform than here, with various topics, including football. Do we really need one here as well.   :unknown:

There will of course be inflated figures since OT has gone as many may post more in the other forums, possibly a benefit from deleting OT if it gives the forum greater focus, the flip side is of course it dilutes the focus.

At the end of the day your forum your choice, personally I think deleting OT is a shame, but then that's of course from a user perspective as opposed to  management perspective.

But the shit (Flirting & other bollocks) seems to be on the rise in the main forums
