URL works via home broadband but can't access via mobile on Three today, just get a blank page, not even an error message or warning.  Anyone else ?

My iPad has a Three SIM card and that’s working fine.

You dont have adult content enabled. Try accessing pornhub to confirm

It's very likely if you are using three data sim. You need to enable the 18+ content using a credit card or from a three store by showing them your ID.

Offline MrMagik

In addition to the above, Three's 4g data has been pretty flaky for me recently too, so I switch it to 3g/2g on my phone and have no issues accessing ukp.

Right? I thought it was just me. Piss take..

Online OakTree

lately I've been having problems with three. The "adult filter page is on" keeps coming up and I keep setting it to off but every few days or so it comes up again.

Offline Marmalade

You might adjust it via their app and then switching your phone on and off to reboot your connection.

Offline Blackpool Rock

The last week or so when i've been out and about and using 3 mobile i've had continued issues with blank pages and a message saying something about "The connection has been reset", same issue for AW as UKP.
Sometimes sorts itself if you shut the page down and reload but sometimes have to switch the data off and on, once had to shut the device down before it would work

Offline Marmalade

I notice it with public WiFi’s. You can get round it with a fast VPN. Useful for some situations but mostly blocked on UKP as it means too much work winnowing out cunts and troublemakers. OldAdmin let at least some people use it on here or from non-cunting countries, but the new Admin may have removed it for simplicity. I think the only time I’ve not been able to connect (in range) either by 3/4g or wifi is when some (usually Muslim) country shuts down the internet. I’ve heard China might become a problem too.

Maybe one day we might go back to the old method of coded details scribbled on a bit of paper, shredded into a public waste bin immediately after the punt.

I've been having that same problem connecting to various web pages with my Three phone over the past couple weeks. I thought my old punting phone was finally packing up.

I had a similar issue on my ipad with 3 data sim, adult filter page came up, so logged into my account, checked and filter was already off, tried again and OK...  glad it wasn't just me having the same issue

Mine keeps turning the filter on. Annoying at times. Been happening a lot this week

Offline robsmith149

Keeps happening with my  3 mobile broadband, just have to take out the dongle and put it in again but pretty annoying.

Offline LLPunting

Thanks to all for chipping in.
Issue appears to have self-resolved so probably down to dodgy connection and timeouts buggering up the filtering.

I find that anytime I try to access the site via a Virgin Media WiFi connection the site won't load. So I revert to using my mobile data. Good think I have 30GB  :D

I know at one point they mainly used the Orange network, not sure if this is still the case and whether Orange also has issues or whether it's just a 3 glitch

Offline MrMagik

Maybe they're intentionally making it flaky so that when they roll out 5g (this year apparently), they can tell everyone how much of an improvement it is!

Online OakTree

I think they only used orange as a backup for it's 2g. They then went to O2 (I think) but as of now I'm not sure.

On the whole I'm quite happy with three but it's just this adult filter issue that's lately been a problem. I know Marmalade mentioned after resetting the app, switch off and re-start. That does actually work but then a few days later it's pinging back up again that adult filter is on.

Just checked and from this article it looks like they actually have their own network these days

Yes, I've been having that problem. Including a dodgy connection to AW on my punting phone, which just finally started redirecting to Three, yesterday.

At this point I've found that AdultWork and any adult content they've flagged is blocked on my phone. The redirect says that I can enable adult content using a credit card, which I think has to be connected to an address. So, I'm not doing that. It also says that I can have adult content enabled in store using my ID. But the big question is if this will remove my anonymity? I don't want my ID linked to my SIM, which defeats the entire purpose of having a anonymous punting phone.

Anyone know if they simply verify age and then enable adult content, or if they record and link your personal details to the sim card?

Download the ‘three’ app
Talk to them via app chat
They already know you’re 18+
They will unlock it
Reset your phone, so the settings take place
Enjoy.

Just when I'm home and connected to the WiFi but as I've mentioned I've got loads of data to use

Offline JayEZ2K

Cheers. The Three app was buggy and wouldn't work.

I ended up using the Three online chat with customer service. They wanted my name, date of birth, and even my address. Yeah right. So I gave them all info in punting fashion and the card was unlocked.

I use three mobile, but have the adult blocking removed on there. But from memory. I am pretty sure you can use it with the porn block on via tethering.

So by that I mean tethering to another device from the phone it will work on that other device.

Failing that on the phone OperaMini browser on Android has its own internal server that works as a proxy between the website and the phone so that should overcome it too.

Or Firefox has just introduced DNS over HTTPS inside the browser that everyone in the tech industry is going crazy over as it means you will get over all the porn website blocking the government is going to implement as it blocks from your ISP ever knowing and thus blocking what websites you are going to. You need to manually turn it on in the settings its not turned on by default. This should overcome three's blocking too.

Could you explain more about this Anth? Is this anything to do with the Private Window feature (which I already use)?

I suspect it's just snafus rather than Machiavellian restrictions, perhaps due to network maintenance.

Offline Marmalade

It’s getting pretty annoying. I get on to UKP ok on it but with other sites it constantly asks me to update my adult filter if I use Three (which now makes fuck all difference). So I switch to local wifi (which sometimes will block UKP and which UKP may block from some locations). So on occasion I can constantly be switching between 4G, wifi and VPN.  :dash:

Hi Anth, good to see you back.

Is Firefox a special case? I use Firefox Chrome Safari and Duck But I thought it was just ISP-based. Is it going to be software based as well?

I use Firefox, but not very tech-savvy.

Could you explain more about this Anth? Is this anything to do with the Private Window feature (which I already use)?

Firefox is the first browser to implement DNS over HTTPS inside the browser itself in its settings.

There is two forms of secure DNS being developed in a format war going on over which will be most popular (DNS is what turns website names e.g UKpunting.com, into the website IP address e.g for UKP its: 185.62.188.157) Your ISP, therefore, can know every website you go to, even if you use another providers DNS as DNS is not secure/encrypted.

Therefore there are two forms of secure DNS being developed; DNS over TLS (TCP), or DNS over standard HTTPS traffic. With DNS over TLS you can still be monitored what you are doing by your ISP by them monitoring the TCP port and thus can stlll block/monitor what you are doing.

DNS over HTTPS is using DNS over standard HTTPS and thus your activity is pretty much hidden from your ISP as its mixed in with all regular HTTPS activity that your ISP cannot monitor. Thus the new porn blocking the government is soon going to implement in the UK is going to be totally worthless as is all other monitoring they are doing on you as if you use this. They are screwed.

Firefox has implemented DNS over HTTP inside the browser itself. The first to do so. And not the DNS over TLS the UK government wants everyone to use. So they were nominated for the yearly internet villain award for doing it as they are going to mess up every one of the UK government plans.

External Link/Members Only

Then a massive controversy kicked off so they then got deselected. And then it was deemed the award won't go ahead at all this year.

External Link/Members Only

But you can enable DNS over HTTPS inside Firefox right now. You need to manually turn it on inside the UK. But once its on, its on. Here is the two ways how.

External Link/Members Only

You are basically crazy not using it as there is no reason not to.

You can also if you don't want to use Firefox get it via Cloudflare right now. I have a Pihole setup with DNS-over HTTPS as I like to use Opera browser mostly. You just need to follow this guide to set it up.

I use 3 for punting. I tend to change sim every now and then, but on buying a new 3 sim, would not activate. Guessed it was faulty and bought another new one. Still would not activate.  Tried in another phone, still no joy. Old 3 sim works fine in both. Spoke to chat, they said it will work in 15 mins... bugger all.  I think 3 is worse than flakey at the mo...

Great tech info from Anth as usual and it sounds like important stuff. But mobile phones?  Firefox doesn’t seem to be able to display those settings in iOS and I haven’t tried Android yet.

The other annoying thing for anyone running iOS is that the default browser is fixed to Safari. I suppose Tor would work, as that will give the option of forcing https when available though I don’t know if that’s exactly the same thing.

I use Firefox a lot as it’s the best configurable browser but sometimes I just want something clean and simple like Safari. Or (even if it sucks) Chrome for something like auto translate.

But seriously, if the government get pissed off at Firefox can’t they just get ISPs to detect which browser is running and then block all content unless it is a browser other than Firefox with these added protections?

It definitely works in Android. Just checked it now. You just need to go to about:config to set it. I haven't got anything from Apple to check IOS though.

I finally got the Three app to work. Something to be wary of is the user agreement, and their tracking and archiving of your online searches, and maybe other things as well. There's a way to turn it off, but the settings are so intentionally vague it's not clear if it's being turn off or on. I know it's a punting phone and all, but the less they have, the better.

Considering how easily their “settings” seem to default back of their own accord sometimes maybe a simple subscription to a decent VPN would be worthwhile (though you’d have to switch it off to access UKP).

Offline Marmalade

I was going to suggest TOR (available on iOS as Onion Browser). But it displays this delightful little warning:

Quote
CURRENT SECURITY ADVISORIES: (last updated 2019-06-18)
  •  WebRTC/Media leaks: Due to iOS limitations, WebRTC and media files leak outside of Tor and are routed over the normal internet. This will reveal your real IP address to sites using these features. (If you are using a VPN, the VPN IP address is revealed instead.) To defend against this, you may set Strict security mode in Host Settings, which will disable Javascript. More information here.
  •  OCSP leak: Visiting EV "Green Bar" HTTPS sites may leak information that can be used to reveal the domain name of the website you are visiting. This is handled within iOS and cannot be changed by Onion Browser. There is no known workaround. A detailed report can be found here.
  •  Further technical information can be found here.

Apple sucks.

So VPN sounds the best. Let Three know you go on punting sites with your punting phone if that’s the only option (AW uses JavaScript, can’t remember if UKP does).

One could avoid Three but are other ISPs going to follow suit anyway?
Seems we’re living in China folks.

Any other helpful techie comment / advice?
