I don't necessarily go for the cheapest option because that can be a bit crap, but nevertheless the guy who had the highest quote did turn up in a very nice - and current - Jag. I did kind of think: 'why should I pay for your Jag when all you're doing is digging my garden' so I chose from the other two

The warning signs are there. They'll start with small amounts to test the water and then there'll be a sob story about needing a large amount up front, accompanied no doubt by the promise of several bookings at some heavily discounted amount. She'll take the money but you'll never see any of the bookings.

My advice would be to ditch them fast.

that's a druggie asking for money to score. She'll be contacting anyone and everyone she sees as a soft touch.
Break contact, block her phone number, walk away. She's not your problem

No. Personally I don't think you can ever fully trust a WG. However my regular has become a good friend and we have non paid meets for coffee and sometimes a meal. She would even split the bill.
Has she asked for a wee loan for her daughters car repair, "yes" . Did I give it to her "no". Do I feel I should have - "yes".

So... it's not a deposit and it's not in the context of escorting services? 

Sometimes with a regular, boundaries are crossed.  Only you can know where that is leading or how genuine the request and likelihood of repayment are. 

You wouldn't recommend paying a deposit to an unknown WG though, surely?
