Offline cueball

I've noticed a lot recently that a good number of lads are linking ukp nics to other social media nics and also posting actual names of punters (not their nics).

I'm sure there is no malice intended but this could inadvertently "out" fellow members, remember, on here, just use the ukp nic and nothing else.

Note.. admin may decide to move this to off topic but not all have access to it.

Nice one cueball, I was thinking of doing the same but couldn't decide if I should start a new thread or post in an existing one.

Agree, Its a cunt thing to do in my opinion especially so when its done through retaliation.

Yes a good bit of advice, lets hope its followed.

Not sure how easy it would be for Admin to do, but perhaps all new members should get a message in their inbox when they create an account, with useful advice on preserving anonymity?

I know there is a rules section, and punting wiki, but most people tend to dive straight into posting on forums without reading those thing, at least in my experience. Messages in the inbox tend to get read.

First rule of UKP is you do not talk about UKP! People really do leave themselves wide open.

Maybe this thread could become a sticky (not sure of the term) so it stays visible.

It will eventually pick up good advice on posting behaviour etc

I'm 99% certain I know a member of the forum after indiscreet posts he made a few months back. Vicarious connection through friends and family. Never mentioned it before, haven't contacted him and have no intention or desire to do so.

Struck me as monumentally stupid to triangulate yourself in the way he did. Should be a lesson to us all

One trick I use is to include misinformation in posts and reviews. Nothing that will affect the reader, but just enough to create confusion in the minds of anyone that might know me.

This thread and a couple of others recently surprise me a bit. Obviously sound advice from Cueball but how easy is it to find out a punters real identity? I'm thinking of the McFly incident(s) and A recent thread that I posted about a punter who, unfortunately and unbeknown to me passed away recently, but other punters knew who he was.

The closest I could come to identifying a punter would be to look at UKP reviews and AW feedback. Often they are so similar that it's obvious who they came from the same guy, but where their real identity comes from, I don't know. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in the least bit interested in finding out punters' true identities, I'm just curious.

PS, I've fallen into the UKP v AW review trap already; even had a WG thank me and tell me she got off on reading my review of her on UKP

I have one WG who has linked my UKP with my AW which has unnerved me somewhat. As has been mentioned, I now disguise my reviews with heavy dollops of misinformation. Nothing that detracts from the value of the punt review, just enough to make it very difficult for the WG to put 2 and 2 together.

Yep I've had one WG link them too due to indiscretion on my part.
On that occasion I quoted from a message on AW in a post on here.
WG saw it and sent me an abusive message on AW.
Lesson learnt.

Having said that, although I don't go out of my way to stalk guys, I have linked at least 3 members on here with their AW profiles just through reading specific details and dates of meetings.

I agree with this, and I posted a picture from photo bucket, which had my real name, so grateful admin removed the picture

Instead of taking my time with my post, I rushed it, so its best to think things through before posting anything

Write them in word now, then cut and paste when 'perfect'

UKP has grown, it's not only lurkers that read the topics. I'm sure journalists, mumsnet members and others fascinated or appalled with punting activity read topics on this site.

Info you share can be gathered. Where you live or work, which team you support, which party you voted for, how old you are, how many kids you have etc..

When sharing info via PM's - it's ultimately your decision what you share but be vigilant about sharing your number/e-mail and whether you have whatsapp linked to the number and the picture/nickname you have on there.

AW - I don't use AW to contact girls but those who do may choose to use a different name than their UKP ID and try not to link it. If a girl asks you to email her privately then use a punting email not connected to your real name.

Twitter - I didn't even realise this was used to contact WG's until recently. Again follow above steps.

Phone - Probably the most important security aspect for organising a punt and the easiest way to discover someone's identity. Use a punting phone. Disable/delete any apps such as facebook, whatsapp or any other social media and contact apps, or just use a non-smartphone.

Never tell someone your real name or where you live. Make up a story about what you do for a living. Keep your belongings and things that can identify you safe. Either at home, in the car or if you choose to go in to a WG's flat with them, don't go showering while they are left in the room. A nosy WG can find out your identity. They may not do anything but it only takes one psycho to start blackmailing you.

Most of this is common sense and not a James Bond movie.

I expect the whole truth in nothing here, punting for me is chance to be someone different.

Same here, I post misinformation on purpose nowadays sometimes and NO one even punters I know and have met know I am doing it. Like you what I post doesn't affect the overall honesty of what I post, it just makes it a bit harder for pricks like Asianbeast who I have had a spate with and he REALLY didn't take it well to work out if what I have posted is the case or not.

With the sensitivity and lets say it, the societal shame of what we do. I'm flabbergasted that certain punters happily chat and tweet to escorts on twitter etc. If they're attached with families, they're playing with fire. Some of them even have the same username on here, AW and Twitter. Talk about making it easy for people with less than great intentions.

Some of the outright luvviness seen on here the last few months especially in regard to certain escorts has made punters seriously drop their guard. Especially when posting details.

I hope this 'asianbeast' incident has reminded those of us with something to lose the potential consequences if exposed. Not only financial ruin but social as well. And double that if you have kids.
