I do think wanking can be a factor -- but often it's largely a mental one and down to not really being aware of your body.  A while back while listening to a sex podcast I realised that there's a lot down to fearing that you'll either come to fast, or be unable to come at all, whereas learning to enjoy yourself 'in the moment' can often be the key to a better end sttae.

If you can get into a zen like state, you pretty much take your time, no hippie, I've just found that works for me. I've had times were I've lasted two strokes doesn't really bother me like it used to; I've found it more when I've taken a break from sex or just not been able to relax.
