Author Topic: How Facebook 'outs' Sex Workers (could apply to punters...)  (Read 4754 times)

Offline banquet1

Saw an interesting article on how punters Facebook pages were turning up in a WG's 'people you may know' - despite her work phone and email not being linked to her Facebook account. This article is written from the WG point of true, but definitely applies in the reverse.

It links through whatsapp. You can opt to turn the linking off.

All it takes is for two phones to be on and in fairly close proximity. It happens to me on a fairly regular basis. When l go into a local shop, a woman who works there, l don't know otherwise or her me, often appears in my "people you might know" list. I don't think there is anything sinister in it. Just the usual big brother stuff you have to accept with social media.

I binned off WhatsApp a while back as I realised it was a security cluster fuck.
Even when I had it I didn't get any WG's turning up as people I know.
Funny thing is that I've been frequenting Thai massage places for a while now and always seem to get various Thai Facebookers appearing. I guess it must be the phone number thing. :unknown:

Well that is scary - one of the top tips is also use a 3rd party browser that is not your main one for AW, this site, booking hotels for WG, how to get to WG etc and porn sites....  Only use this browser for this and nothing else. All helps to keep you safe   :)

I'm not on facebook now but when I was someone from a TCM I visited a lot had her profile displayed.  I enjoyed flicking through her albums and reliving her nekkid torso, I can tell you.

What's a TCM?

Offline sparkus

TCM = Traditional Chinese Medicine, i.e. the rub and tug shops who masquerade as offering herbs and acupuncture etc.

(forgot I wasn't on the London TCM thread)

I've noticed the phone number thing a few times actually. That was the first thing that made me unlink my number from my profile!

Thought so, just wasn't completely sure!

I don't think you can any more.

I've had Whatsapp for ages, long before Facebook brought them. If you were a historic user of Whatsapp you were able to turn that link off after the acquisition. I discovered that in a thread on here a couple of years ago.

If you've started to use Whatsapp since they became part of Facebook I'm pretty sure you can't turn the link off.

i saw some business contacts popping up on my overseas whoring FB account! No pictures of me on there or anything that could link me so I block them and carry on. I reckon it does it by cookies.

Offline king tarzan

I don't use this social media shit
Extremely remote chance of me ever being outed
(I know some pathetic individual tried and failed to out me, making up lies to make me look like a clumsy clown, only the dark shadow but nothing more was revealed. . No pictures, no area details)

People who do reveal /outing are a bunch of dirty fucken cunt wankers!!

That made me think of something. Whenever I use googlemaps on my phone more often than not it shows massage joints in the “places of interest tags”. Now maybe its just cos I notice them more than restaurants or whatever. I certainly never google anything like that. So does gmaps watch my phone’s locations and suss I spend a lot of my time in such places? Could be true - certainly its technically possible

It does via whole heap of things including cookies, devices used, frequent proximity to another user, the users you view on facebook and so on.  The best thing to do is to have a separate punting phone, and never take your actual phone to the punting venue.

That and basic data hygene - limit the sites with which you sign in with facebook/google etc, keep your punting number as unlinked as possible (not a bad thing for your real number too to be honest).

I was just prospecting on AW for a punt for November when I have a journey to make and I spied a lady I fancied. Then I saw she had a 'normal' email address on the AW profile. I read the name which was in the address. I looked at Facebook and there she was with the same face - a different photo but clearly her. I rather fancy her but it might be risky. She has outed herself.

The above is correct. All old users were able to opt out. However, if they thn downloaded whatsapp as a new app on their new phone, AFAIR, they could no longer opt out of the new app.

I use my old smart phone for punting but have few apps on it, certainly no social media apps, just Google maps and a few games to pass the time if I'm early. I know people are paranoid about being discovered, throw away phones, police letters, Linkedin panic etc but FFS, you'll get rumbled for knocking on a prossie's door or, "hey I saw you driving down X last week, what were you doing in that end of town?" in front of your Mrs, not because a a woman appears on FB as somebody you might know, I get hundreds of them every day, and even if they are a prossie it won't say, "do you want to be friends with that brass you shagged last week?"

I honestly think some people love all the subterfuge and cloak and dagger stuff because it increases the jeopardy, there's something about visiting a WG that goes above and beyond just a shag ,it's not just cheating on your Mrs, half the stuff that gets repeated on here about the stigma of being a punter is generated by the punters themselves to massage their own egos as in the civvy world they're just another bloke in the street, this is the only time they cross a line, except when the took a drag of that blokes "herbal' cigarette at the back of a pub in the 90s, that they retell every time they have more than two pints that golden 30 minutes between lucidity and throwing up.

A year or two ago, after AW added the share options, I was seeing AW pop-up on my "you may also like" list.

I have since quite FB and am blocking third-party cookies. I also make use of the private browsing option in Firefox.

From the article above, the connections are found by FB mobile trawling your contacts and phonebook entries - so do not give FB your mobile number and block it's access to the phone book.

Google is also working on a system to match social media to off-line activity via credit records.

You just need to use a different browser mate which is only used for the likes of this forum and adult work,  that way there is no chance of any accidents or awkward questions while following items are in your newsfeed et cetera

That is one option, but it is easy and less error prone just to block the cookies and use private-browsing features in the browser.

Facebook is a fucking nightmare. The idea that they “take privacy seriously” is rubbish. Facebook owns Whatsapp, but whereas Whatsapp has some fairly simple privacy features you practically need a PhD to make Facebook safe.

For Whatsapp, go into settings and make all the settings “Only My Contacts” (you can choose “Nobody” but that has drawbacks). Then make sure there are no prossies in your phone’s Contacts list.

(By default, WhatsApp will automatically set your privacy settings to allow any WhatsApp user to view your Read Receipts, last seen, profile photo and status. To change it, go to Settings as above.)

In your phone settings, under Notifications, switch off showing Notifications on your Lock screen.

Whatsapp has end-to-end encryption (something Amber “call-me-an-idiot” Rudd wants to ban). The encryption is cool (Wikileaks showed how the CIA can get round it by hijacking the phone but not by decrypting the messages). However Whatsapp provide your phone number to Facebook for purposes of targeted advertising including unwanted messages. There was an option to turn this off with the upgrade but most people would simply have clicked ‘agree’ as we all do when asked if we agree to 30 pages of small-print conditions.

Whatsapp has one of the External Link/Members Onlyfor privacy protection but as far as I can see it is mainly for lack of privacy from governments, not other users.

Thanks Marmalade that is really quite information about watsapp.  :drinks:

Tech is highly likely to be the downfall of us all. It’s amazing how many prossies use their real number which, in turn, will often make them show up on various forms of social media; whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, etc. I don’t use Snapchat, but have heard it’s just as bad.

For this reason I decided to keep my social media presence to a minimum. I removed myself from Facebook, have never used Instagram, deleted my Twitter, and put minimal info on whatsapp. I don’t actually punt that much anymore, but do have the occasional extra-marital thing going on. I didn’t really use the stuff enough to miss it either.

Might be over cautious, but I did have a few close shaves and haven’t since. At least not tech based.

Agree completely re. Facebook. Not sure if I noticed it’s vulnerabilities more because I used it more, but even trying to achieve, what should have been, simple privacy tasks was near impossible. I’ve also heard enough stories to believe it has access to, and uses, many of the apps in your phone. Feel much better without it.

This is the WhatApp FAQ on the topic - the controls do not provide the restrictions that most users think they do - the personal information is still shared with FB ...

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and GOOGLE all share you're information together, this includes app data, location data and contact data, also if you allow them access to photos videos etc, they can access geotags from them too
