Not in my experiences it wasn't, in fact 25 years ago was less than a decade after AIDS really started hitting the headlines and in 1987 was the big AIDS campaign here, WGs of the day were mainly really worried and I recall some saying I had to wear two condoms which I pointed out wasn't safer, in fact it could be less safe. I don't recall EVER being offered BB in those days. We were all going to die of AIDS was the fear then. And I most certainly didn't walk if condoms were offered.

BB was not very common in my early youth, but that was for fear of pregnancy rather than any other reason. As soon as the Contraceptive Pill became available in the late 1960s the fear of pregnancy abated, and bareback became quite common until Aids hit the western hemisphere; then once it was realised what a grisly business death from Aids was the condom came back into fashion - about the early 80s I believe.
