Now how has this happened!

A WG I have seen has popped up on my Facebook suggested friends list. How has this happened?

I use a different phone for punting from which I have never accessed facebook.
I always browse AW in private mode in my browser

I absolutely stumped, I now know her real name and that she lives fairly locally. We don;t share any mutual friends. The only thing I can think of is we both have a few common interests in things like food, yoga etc we are both a little hippyish so maybe Facebook is trying to be clever linking local people with common interests.  Just worried she might see me too in the suggest a friend bit!

Is the number for your punting phone in your other phone ??

If she has saved your punting number this is how it can happen.

No, I have not stored it in my civie phone, very odd.

I would not worry too much. This can happen to our way of thinking "out of the blue". There was an interesting programe on Radio4 only yesterday trying to explain the algorythms used by Facebook (and others). You say she lives quite close and have several interests in common? Facebook looks at your location and your searching history, albeit on another phone/device and tries to put the two together. Simple as that. It could also be that although you use a punting phone, your civvie phone has been close to the WG's phone, which would make it more likely. It is mind boggling what information they know about you and uses. I think it's far more likeley to be coincidence. The problem arises if a WG gets the same message and she knows your name and you have a profile pic. I would still suggest most would be as horrified as you thst their private life could be invaded. It only becomes a prob if you piss one off?

Offline TPreston

First thought is some link between whatsapp, instagram and facebook. Presume your punter phone has none of the above downloaded and linked to your 'true' accounts?

I dont know how their algorithm works. But maybe if she has searched for you and clicked on your profile? And has found you through her own inquiries - searching just a name and a location can help find people.

Offline stevedave

Do you use a punting email address? If you've emailed her from your normal email, perhaps that's how facebook has linked you?

No everything is totally separate, my punting phone has no facebook, instagram etc. That is why i'm so surprised to see her pop up.

Thanks for mentioning that programme, tcl; I've just listened to it on the iplayer and you're right it was mind-blowing, specially to an old fogey like me who doesn't 'do' social media, how algorithms have been developed to affect information that's presented to someone who is on sites like Facebook.

Offline NervousJ

Coincidence, quite possible if you see a WG from the same county I guess or even same city....

Could even be some of your friends have seen her and this has then thrown her up into your searches.....

I've had this twice on FB.  One WG is a friend of a friend and another I have no connection with (I've never seen her) but recognise the pictures.

Maybe your friends also see her and they have her number in their phones

Online Hungarian Lover

Happened to me the other week, made a mistake by leaving my punting phone at home I had to use my I phone, working girl was flagged up by Facebook  as someone I might know and therefore I was able to see her Facebook page and I assume she could see mine. Interesting in one sense but worrying that she might have seen my page. Hopefully I have blocked access on my page and phone.

Offline Silver Birch

Did she get a chance to look through your personal stuff when you went for a shower? Perhaps she discovered your real name in your wallet, then searched you on Facebook later. That would create a link potentially adding her to "people you may know", which will also reciprocate on her profile.

Offline Sedition

Same, a girls phone wasn't working properly one day and she must have given me her proper number. A few weeks later she popped up as "someone I might know" not on Facebook per se but on Facebook messenger. I told her about it but she wasn't that fussed as we know each reasonably well. Not like I'm going to put some daft comment on her page.
My page is friends only anyway.

Presumably you are using a phone for punting that has at some point, been linked to FB? Otherwise it is difficult to see how her simply using her personal phone would create a link to you.

There is no such thing as a coincidence in the world of Facebook - that does not pay the bills cold hard data crunching does. You have missed something it's as simple as that.

Very likely to be the answer.
Do you have any mates who are married/in a relationship for a while and have kids ? They are likely to be punters ( won't be getting enough at home or partner insufficiently filthy for their tastes)
Any single mates? They are likely to be punters too.

Quite often Punters do NOT have a fake punting facebook profile, so STUPIDLY search on their real fb profile a WGs mobile number or her email address, NOT realising the consequence of this!!!  :dash: :dash: :dash:.

If you are stupid enough to do the above, then YOUR real facebook profile pops up on HER facebook page, for possible friends to add.

If she is then nosey enough to look you up, then her fb profile will invariably later pop up on your facebook page, asking you if you want to add her as a friend.

After reading all the replies here - you are one of possibly dozens of men she's seen.  She is one of a few you've seen.  Is there something memorable about your visit to her, or your face, that would make her say to herself "I know him - I fucked him recently".  When I go into a room full of people at a party who know each other but who I don't know, they will probably remember me, but I couldn't remember all of them when it's over.

I don't use Facebook hardly at all but lets say that I do have a properly set-up profile, friends etc...Always use my personal email if sending stuff to WGs and always my personal number for contacting. Use my real first name too and my personal email has my surname in it... Yet not once have I had a WG come up on Facebook. I seriously wonder what you guys are doing sometimes to make this happen. xD

Think I have cracked it! The girl in question turned up at the same yoga studio I go too on a Saturday morning with the other half. After a little investigation in turns out she has also liked the studio on Facebook so that is where the link comes from I guess.

Needless to say I was a little distracted in class, luckily she was a pro and said nothing in class, just a cheeky text to my punting phone after!

Or your yoga positions for that matter.

Were you comparing them both doing downward dog?

Instagram also is linked FYI, in my very early punting days I did use my own number so had some girls pop up. Luckily nothing came of it and I have changed numbers since and now always have a punting phone.

If you have nothing to lose it is a great way of seeing real pictures of girls rather than airbrushed crap on AW so I would say setting up a fake blank profile is worth while of you can get away with it

I used to follow a regular parlour on Facebook. One of the posts wishing followers a happy christmas, was liked by a young Romanian girl.

I clicked on her profile and in the suggested friends listing was one of my regular parlour girls. It was strange looking at her wedding photos when I remember pushing her head down a little more whilst servicing me.

A scan of her friends lists show the profiles and in most cases the real names of 5 other parlour WG's three independents and two porn actresses.

Scary stuff. A stalker's dream.

Does your punting phone have wifi, if you let it connect to the same router as the civvy phone at the same time, FB will know soon enough that they belong to the same person, even though you have not directly accessed FB from the punting phone.

Or are you a BT broadband customer, and did you have your civvy phone on the punt, if the WG also had BT , possibly your civvy phone connected to the internet while you were punting, so you were both on her IP address at the same time.

I have 2 civvie FB accounts, but not registered a phone number on either, and I have only ever searched WG phone numbers in google, rarly use FB on my phone.  I pretty much only use Firefox, but a few months ago used google chrome for some reason to open my hotmail, and chrome raided my address book and all of a sudden FB is asking me if I knew about a 15 year back catalogue of girls

I have only used my punting after my first 4 punts, never saved anything with those early punts.

I'm going to switch my Nokia basic phone this year to a smart phone, then create a punting FB, punting whatsapp, using my existing punting email.  I won't be connecting via my home broadband though, I'll stick to using mobile data to make sure there is no overlap

There is some scary shit here ^^ :scare:

I thought I had been as cautious as possible, but who really knows what data is being collected in the background!

- My punting phone does not connect to the internet.
- I only ever email wgs via AW, or phone them from my punting phone (never any other method)
- I never search for wgs or phone numbers on FB

Normally I try to only carry punting phone, money and keys into a punt, but that is not always possible and I have had my personal phone on occasions. Sometimes it has been turned off, but not always. I hadn't even considered the possibility of automatically connecting to their wifi. Many probably don't have a router in the workplace, but still a precaution I will take in future

Facebook - and don't forget Google - can do some scary shit these days. Do you have location services turned on with either phone, and ever had them in the same place? Does your punting phone have a contact that your main phone has? I know Facebook looks up your contacts on your phone and suggests them as people you may know.

What's to say Facebook and Google haven't made some secret deal where they share info about your IP addresses, phone numbers, other linkable / identifyable info (e.g. names of people and places you search in Google or Facebook) to make connections between you and WGs?

I bet the average WG has a lot of "people you may know" who are clients and doesn't have the time or doesn't want to think about them unless she's a scammer or has a grudge.

What's to say that WGs don't get scared when a client appears on their civie Facebook?

When setting up punting smartphone it helps not to put in your real name on the profile / even similar.  As this will show - like on WhatsA.  So you can bet the same for FB.  I bet you a few UKP'ers have done this in error

Prior to UKP, I used to run an email club for exchanging punting info with approx 30~40 East and West Mids Punters from the other board.

Most of them had a punting email address, but it was shocking to find a few HAD still used their real names in the punting email ID (shown in the From Box), when setting up their punting email address.

I don't think that is correct. All FB will see is the same two phone on the same IP address. But everyone else in the centre using the WiFi will also show the same IP address. So FB will know the two phones were on same IP address (along with many other phones) but they have no idea if they belong to the same person or different people.

If you want to be safe, DO NOT ever install the FB app on your phone as it gains access to everything. If you must use FB, just go to External Link/Members Only and log in there. Using it this way gives it no access to your contacts or other info on your phone.

Facebook doesn't access quite everything. Compare the permissions it asks for vs other apps on an android and the list is not huge. Mostly it's your contacts, call info, text messages, and location if you have that turned on. It doesn't appear to ask to know about your WIFI connections.

It is still too intrusive, they have no business reading your text messages or accessing who you called recently.

I know some people use FB for biz or else are just addicted. Best to get expert on it if you have to. No point in being more paranoid than necessary.  :bomb:
