I would say it is safe, I have visited a couple of girls in the past a bit deeper into that estate (Canute house) and had no problems during the day

I have parked in the car park just of college street when i go to Southampton shopping or for an evening out on Oxford Street.

Never had any problems so i would say its as safe as anywhere can be.
