30 years ago today F1 driver Ayrton Senna died in a track crash in the San Marino grand Prix. In probably the worst weekend in F1 history Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger also lost his life in a practice crash the day before.
Ayrton had won 3 World titles before his fatal crash and many rate him as the greatest racing driver of all time.

The author Paul Auster has died aged 77. I particularly liked The New York Trilogy, The Music Of Chance, The Book Of Illusions to name but three. I kind of lost interest with his more recent work which didn't really grab me the way his earlier novels did, but an excellent writer nonetheless.

Roland Ratzenberger was pretty much forgotten about and hardly got a mention even at the time which wasn't really fair, I remember at work all the talk was about Senna and then a girl looked up and asked "Why are you all just talking about Senna, wasn't there another driver killed too  :unknown:"

Yes Senna was such a well known driver who had won the title 3 times and would have won it again if he'd had the right seat but another man lost his life which is the ultimate sacrifice, I was as much to blame as anyone else for just focussing on Senna but now as i'm older I reflect and think I was wrong all that time ago

Strangely enough a couple of days ago I opened up a cardboard box of videos and DVD's that I have in storage and the Senna film was on the top, I thought to myself that I must watch that again sometime, probably make it in the next few weeks with this prompt  :drinks:

Rubens Barrichello also had a bad crash that weekend and was knocked unconscious.  Like you say everyone remembers Senna but people forget about Ratzenberger who died the day before. Senna was deeply effected by this and wanted the race weekend called off but was talked in racing which ended in tragic consequences. Despite Prost being a big rival he was one of the pall bearers at his funeral and later became patron of the Senna charity foundation .
I don't think the Williams team ever recovered from this tragedy either. Safety did improve after these events with wheel tethers fitted to all cars and the helmet / neck restraints to stop whiplash injuries

Yes that comes out in the film and I always thought it was strange how the 2 drivers seemingly hated each other but then Prost spoke so highly of Senna and then carried his coffin etc

I guess that cut throat bitter rivalry was what spurred both of them on while racing but deep down there was a respect and grudging admiration certainly by Prost towards Senna

When I bought my first guitar from the famous Hessy's in Liverpool in the late 50s, the   first things l learnt were the Duane Eddy numbers.
Like the Ventures and Shadows stuff.
All easy to play for a beginner.

Having said that they didn't have much competition as the BBC's favourite was still the old Bert Wheedon, if anyone remembers him.

Yeah, just seen this, a great actor, I'll always remember  him for playing Yosser Hughes in the tv series Boys from the Blackstuff. Had this been a film he would have won an Oscar for his performance.

I noticed no sources I read mentioned him playing David Blunkett in A Very Social Secretary, which is sadly missing from All4.

The same as I get older these people seemed much older to me growing up, now I realise they are closer to my age than I thought.

I'm staggered how much some people can achieve in a relatively short space of time to put it in perspective.
Albini was an advocate of using reel to reel recording methods, while he didn't invent the quiet loud used often by Pixies - he became synonymous with it, Nirvana and also Radiohead Creep, he was right that audiophiles would favour vinyl over streaming and also calling out subscription services like Tidal and remasters as having too much top end (also the reason why my GNR albums are 90s Japanese issues).

As trivia his band Rapeman was named after the Japanese film series and he worked with Peter Sotos.

It was this day ( 11th May) in 1985 that 56 fans died in the Bradford City stadium fire. I remember watching this happen on World of Sport at the time . A terrible tragedy.  It was later found that dropped litter under the stand which had accumulated over a long period of time was ignited by a discarded cigarette.  The stand was mainly constructed in wood causing the fire to spread rapidly. A dark day for English football.

Named after a hugely successful series of Japanese superhero films to appear edgy. Nothing to do with his preferences. Not saying he's a good person just the origin of the name

I knew someone who trained as a fireman in the late 80's and they were shown footage of that incident as part of their training, I believe it was still shown certainly up to fairly recently and may still be shown however he said they got to see some truly horrific footage that was never shown on TV.

I also met a guy about 10 years who was actually a Bradford player and on the pitch at the time, again he said it will stay with him forever seeing what he saw and being powerless to actually do anything meaningful to stop it

Incidents like this with an accumulation of litter and a fire from a discarded cigarette were apparently quite common at various grounds and other public venues but they were normally put out fairly quickly before they had time to spread and properly take hold, I believe a lot of the wooden stand at Bradford was also treated with an oil based tar / bitumen type coating to help stop it rotting but once that got fully ablaze it was game over.

AIR the Kings cross fire was also down to litter accumulating under an escalator and fire safety procedures have been changed to factor this stuff in and the requirement to check / clean these type of areas

I believe it was specifically banned in the US and Germany amongst other countries but took a further 5 years to be banned here for some inexplicable reason

I did read that the cladding could have been deemed as also banned here on some sort of sub section technicality or the rules etc and you may well be right that false claims were made about it but what emerged was a tangled web of smoke and mirrors where everyone stepped back and claimed it wasn't down to them but someone else's responsibility due to XYZ  :dash:

But again my point is how even with a false claim of it's flammability / fire resistance was it still able to be used  :unknown:
I'd expect our regulations to pick this up  :unknown:

Just seen the news that Roger Corman has died, aged 98. Known as the king of B movies, his influence was far greater than that, he often spotted up and coming talent earlier than most.

* My own personal favourite Corman film was The Intruder made in 1962, with a young William Shatner. A classic low budget cinematic gem, still worth a watch in 2024.

Regards EWI (external wall insulation) most companies are now going back to rockwool (mineral wool) literally a few pence more expensive per m sq than the 'fire retardent' poly or extruded . Little bit harder to work with, but ultimately much safer.
