Was a member for a year or so in 2007-2008. When I'd paid the membership, and got access to all the stats, I pretty well gave up before I even started, as the M/F ratio was something like 13:1.
I remember reading about a guy in the States, who was equally despondent when he saw the numbers, but persevered anyway. After a while, with no success, he decided to do a reverse search of sorts, on his own demographic, to see how much direct competition he had in his own locale. After that, he did give up, as the ratios were worse still.
From my own experience, I recall a new profile appearing for an attractive young woman. Her first update was to ask people to bear with her, as in the first few days she'd received a huge (was actually stated) number of replies, that was taking her ages to sort through.
