Author Topic: Supporter Badges for people that donate to UKP?  (Read 1502 times)

Offline vindici

So... last year the Owners kicked off a support drive, and I donated as soon as I could. Around this time IIRC.

I'm going to do the same again shortly, as an annual contribution.

Since titles such "Forum Helper" have been implemented, would it be possible to implement forum badges such as "Supporter 20" and "Supporter 21" "Supporter 22" etc?

It would encourage continued support for the site?

Why do you feel the need for some sort of recognition that you have donated to any organisation let alone a site like this where the benefits far outweigh any contribution that may be made.   :unknown:

I don't feel the need for recognition, this is a system employed on a fair few communities I am involved in outside of punting, I just put this forward as a suggestion as I was reviewing my end of year donations that I like to make. I fully understand the benefits of UKP, which is why I donated the first time.

I don't know what the current finance need is for UKP, but I thought to mention this system as it works well in other communities, and encourages continued support.

If it's not a good for fit for UKP, you guys would know, thanks for looking at the suggestion.

you’d end up with people using it to say other’s points arent valid, similar to what happens when a zero review poster gets on his high horse about something

Yeah I can imagine in a few years time people would be pointing out how they had donated 5 years in a row and someone else had only donated twice etc then the bickering about how their 2 contributions may have been bigger than 5 small ones.
It just gets into a pissing contest about who's dick is bigger than whose

What next a bigger badge or different colour to denote larger donation  :unknown:

I gave a small donation and was happy to do so, fortunately enough people also tipped in to allow the work that was needed to get done.
Unless someone was making a significant donation then it probably wouldn't even touch the sides since a small joining fee was introduced (i'm assuming it's still the case) as most months see over 2000 new members joining

It would create strife amongst people that donate and do not, I think.

We already get onto leeches, it would be worse getting onto people who do not donate, we are unaware of peoples financial circumstances or reasons to donate or not. As long as members can contribute towards helping each other and maintaining the site ethos it does not really have to be money. The option being available to donate if one wants to and paying for membership I think is fine personally.

Why not go the whole hog and issue t-shirts. I can imagine some escort’s reaction if we turned up for a booking wearing one. :D

I can see the back print now:

I came
I paid
I punted
I reviewed

Re the new members. When someone registers an account now they are counted as a new member. Then they have to pay the BTC subscription, which a small proportion do, to become a paid-up member and be able to contribute.

What about one of these?

I wonder what one of those Jim'll fix it badges would fetch at auction/ebay these days?

I'm sure many will have gone in the bin however that does mean there is an increased value from rarity.

Plenty of things are collectable that most people would say "Who would want one" such as genuine Nazi memorabilia but many people do collect this stuff and they aren't necessarily Nazi's

Yes it is an anomaly with the new member data on forums such as this. As you say the new members total is actually people who have just completed the signing up process. On similar forums where I have been able to access more detailed membership data, there are huge numbers who never login again after their account has been approved and they are able to do so. Given the payment required with UKP as part of the approval process I would expect the number to be substantially further reduced.

Shame really as if that was not the case, I think you would be a millionaire some time next year  ;)

Virtue signalling.

Of course it is. The idea is to use that to encourage donations.
