Lots of good technology related advice here, but something far simpler could have been cause of my downfall.  I was just about to leave a WG's apartment when I noticed the Postman walking up the path, and realised the Postman was also my Postman.  That happened a couple of months ago, so I can only assume that he didn't see/recognise me.

Personally I would not risk punting so close to home that we might share a postman  :scare: but I do have a lot to lose.  Nearest I have punted to home about 16 miles.

It's not a risk I plan on taking again.  It's at least 5 miles between my house & the WG's apartment so I didn't think this sort of thing would become an issue.  Either my Postie's patch is a lot bigger than I anticipated, or he was covering for a colleague.  16 miles seems like a decent distance for the future!

Other ideas

Have a separate google account for punting or dodgy stuff and another for home PC
Separate email account for use with extra activities

Dolphin web browser on Androir - can be set to exit and close all history when exiting.    Its also not a bad browser with proper tabs.

Use a different search engine - dogpile for example

WHAT WORRIES ME however is ringing ladies and their engaged - that they might return the missed call and having that call come through at home would be a serious issue    (hence phone gets switched off when this is a possibility).      Anyone else have this issue?

I use IE 'InPrivate' Browsing, have a hidden file stored on the PC for movies and pics, and have a PAYG phone that stays at work  - as I only punt during the day, I don't need it in the evenings....  ;)

The most elementary thing one needs to do is retain sole admin rights on a computer. This prevents somebody else installing applications, such as a keystroke logger. If you want to take that a step further, tamper proof your keyboard, to prevent a hardware device of this nature being installed within the keyboard. All the private browsing in the word or use of proxys, is completely useless, if somebody else has the ability to install apps.

A basic £10, unregistered PAYG phone, topped up with cash only, works best. The higher tech phone you have, the easier it is to track you. If you do have a regular smart phone, either take the battery out before you set off or in the case of an iPhone, simply leave it at home. You're still emitting a potential tracking signal, with the battery in.  ;)

Who or what do you want to hide from that is the first question!

If its from the OH then Linux VM using the tor network via chrome (NOT FF) and reloading from an image every time will keep you moderately safe BUT it does lead to the question if your OH is smart enough of "what are you hiding"
This above option also hides the IP of your machine/router sufficiently that a reverse lookup on an ip from a WG would not yield results see External Link/Members Only

Personally I take the view that hiding in plain site will be sufficient as my OH is not sufficiently IT savvy to find anything incriminating and cognito chrome is good enough.

In terms of phones a punting SIM is enough preferably in a dedicated phone although the risk of the OH finding the phone scares me, I replace sims and forward my actual number to my punting phone just in case the mrs calls

Good advice Marm, but better advice would be to avoid smart phones altogether and buy a £10 unlocked mobile from Tesco.  ;)

The danger is that if punters use applications such as Whatapp, Viber and such like, whilst stupidly using their real phone for punting, that prossie will automatically be added to their contact list too and see all his contacts. The easiest option is to buy an unregistered, unlocked, cheap mobile, topped up with cash only. Lock the sim and phone, but don't keep it in the home!

Even 2nd phones can have their dangers.  Some useful lessons here:

t's amazing what one can accomplish with determination and skill. Within half an hour of finding the phone, I had managed to break the code. It was simple really as he had purchased a pay-as-you-go phone, which was unregistered, naturally. Getting the pin was easy as a result. I would have thought him cleverer than this but that just goes to show how unbelievably confident he was that he wasn't going to be found out. The thing about deception is that eventually the lies will surface and usually when you least expect them to. He later told me that he had always kept the phone in the safe in his office but that lately he had become a little blase and that he would sometimes keep it in his car, which is where I had found it, while randomly searching for something else.

Oof be careful with that!!!

If you can't answer for whatever reason (maybe you are in a bad reception area) the call may go to answerphone.  Now then: the answerphone message may be an automated one giving her your punting phone number!!!  or you put on your own recording: if you do that, you've either got to give your real name or your punting name (because its your punting phone, WG's may call you on it).  If your OH hears you've changed your Answerphone message she may wonder why.

Hear, hear.  The smarter the phone, the closer it conforms to the definition of "a tracking device, which also allows you to make phone calls."

An absolutely basic bog-standard mobile phone with its own SIM card is essential for all of us, especially those with wives/partners.

It's scary how much shit is linked these days. My wife wanted a menu that I'd listed in notes on my iPad. I opened it up for her and then realised that all my notes from my iPhone were also on there! I don't use it for punting but I had made notes about escorts for next week and everything had synched. Realised quickly so deleted it but fuck me potential can of worms

There's two views on it. The standard advice is have a cheap punting phone. Other punters like the security of a smartphone that can give them maps and access to many other things when a punt doesn't pan out. I give people credit for being able to make their mind up according to their own circumstances. People that are worried about wives and so on checking their punting history need to be aware that most browsers leave traces that are a hassle to remove. Frost doesn't leave any traces whatsover and is self-contained. I was in two minds whether to mention it as Mumsnet will now probably do a feature; but if you have a smartphone you can also install an app to hide or disguise  selected apps, as well as photo libraries and details of hotlists.

My punting tactics for an unknown area with a potentially dodgy prossie are altogether different from (for instance) an unthreatening situation with someone I know. You can't access AW or UKP from a £10 mobile (if there are still £10 unlocked mobiles) but if you are using an Android smartphone you can customise a lot of things (less so with iPhones). Anyway, punters should pick and choose advice as fitting their understanding and situation. There's no gospel, and UKP sometimes gets in a rut IMHO with this blanket "only use a throwaway phone" advice. Explain the the pitfalls and precautions then let the punter decide.

If you have to make notes have a separate notes app, locked. Alternatively you can unsync notes, but it's probably easier or better to keep things separate.

I've tried both ways - when I started punting I got a payg sim and stuck it in an old Android phone that I had lying around at home from when I'd moved to an iphone, and used that - and found it very convenient to have it linking to a (punting only) google account, syncing my contacts automatically, and with some web access etc. on it; I could use it for my punting emails too so all communication was in one place, and with me. Sadly the speaker died on it, so I couldn't hear anything when I phoned. I replaced it with a cheap Nokia and used that for a while, but really missed the extras that the android phone had offered, and struggled to send texts on it, being much more used to the smartphone keyboard.

Then the chance came to upgrade my iphone, so I had the old iphone spare, so changed sims again, and now use that one, and have it syncing with my punting google account once more. It looks identical to my real everyday phone, down to ensuring it has the same wallpaper on it, so nobody even notices that I'm carrying it around. Just this week I was glad of it, as I was able to use the mapping on it to find the location of a punt, safe in the knowledge that it wasn't recording any of the searches on my real phone. I can keep any notes I want on it too.

When I don't need the punting phone, I can switch it off and hide it, and still update contact info etc. through the google account, knowing that it will automatically appear on my phone when I next switch it on.

But, everyone is different. This works well for me, but I can also understand why others would hesitate to use a smartphone for this.

You might want to set up android remote wipe on that phone. That way if it ever falls into the wrong hands or goes missing, you can clear it:

Well, it's now an iphone not an android, so not really relevant;) It's all taken care of, don't worry.
